Re: United Cutlery's - The Hobbit - Movie Props!

Looks amazing. I can't be the only one who wants a full suit of this stuff? :) In sadder news, and yes a tiny bit off-topic but please have patience with me, was saddened to see this article on my daily commute home from work today: http://www.theage.com.au/entertainment/movies/andrew-lesnie-dead-at...

Re: United Cutlery's - The Hobbit - Movie Props!
We developed that war hammer for Valyrian Steel, so yes I have. The mace was weighing in at around 8lbs, as I recall, but they will vary slightly from piece to piece. That's less than 1/4 what it would weigh in real steel, but it still requires two hands to h...

Re: United Cutlery's - The Hobbit - Movie Props!
*uncontrollable drooling* but... is it just me or does the haft (not the grip) look considerably shorter on the UC replica versus the prop? Compare the size of the head versus the length on both and you will hopefully see what I am seeing. Also, look at Sauron...

Re: United Cutlery's - The Hobbit - Movie Props!

More on that point, has anyone ordered the UC3034 Mace of Sauron from anywhere? I have the original Helm & Gauntlet, and feel if I let this slip it's an incomplete set, but haven't heard much about it or its availability. UC claims it's for sale via them "USA only", BudK won't allow or...
I would love to do the Moria staff right now, but without a prop, that is pretty much an impossibility (as is getting a prop).
I'm quite certain PJ has one of every prop even from the first films. If not, between him and WETA I'm sure you could name-d...
I asked for samples to review to be sure the blade cavity was not made too tight, an issue with scabbards in the past, and went three rounds before they had it fitting good. That was only a few months ago, so August may be a bit soon to actually see them in s...

Re: United Cutlery's - The Hobbit - Movie Props!

Heh, well right now I'm watching the theatrical cut of 'Return of the King' on free-to-air TV here in Melbourne, and I can tell you the weather outside is equal to the scene in Fellowship when Saruman is trying to bring down the mountain...it's terribly cold and unpleasant with storms, thunder and l...
Kit and all, thanks for the advice. I need one last thing, and it's Hobbit sword related. Orcrist to be exact. So anyway I bought one for myself around the time of my birthday back in March. Opened it up then during my party, put it away, and there it's sat. ...

Re: United Cutlery's - The Hobbit - Movie Props!
As someone who has a bit of inside knowledge, I have to say, PJ holds complete control of practically every aspect of these films, and is absolutely the final say. Of course with regards to the story he has co-writers and restrictions about what material they...

Re: United Cutlery's - The Hobbit - Movie Props!

I think people have to remember that PJ isn't the final say for these films. The rights to get them made were complex and in the courts for a long time. A lot of people have their say for these matters. All you need to do is watch Entourage to get a feel for what that cut throat industry is all abou...

Re: United Cutlery's - The Hobbit - Movie Props!
Gaps are unavoidable with this one, but I see actual bends in the guard in those photos, not just gaps. That, and the crappy grind marks, and glue - nothing acceptable there IMO. The one I bought from production had some excess flashing around the inside of t...

Re: United Cutlery's - The Hobbit - Movie Props!

Thanks guys. So while it's not just mine then, but mine seems to be quite bad. :( I wonder even if the seller has more stock and is willing to do a replacement under manufacturer's warranty, there's the likelihood the replacement is of the same bad batch, I might find myself with the same or worst. ...

Re: United Cutlery's - The Hobbit - Movie Props!
The oil Hanwei used to sell (not sure what they sell now) was just machine oil, like 3-in-1 oil, or gun oil. Those have detergents and preservatives in them, and I can tell you from e xp erience, those are not good to leave on a Damascus blade for long period...

Re: United Cutlery's - The Hobbit - Movie Props!

Jeez, with that kind of shambles it makes you wonder why they even bother to deal with re-issues. I mean as an avid collector of nearly most of the LOTR UC LE items, the fact they're produced more of those has been more than annoying. Looking at the quality of my original Sting scabbard, and seeing ...

Re: Which old UC item would you like to return most?

I think for all the effort Wingnut and WETA put into such lore details, and they've done a GREAT job, compared to most other film series, sometimes the ball gets dropped. So in the EE commentary for FOTR Peter, Fran and Philippa all make the same comment which is in Moria, when Sting is glowing craz...
Guys, BudK have released a video of the Orcrist scabbard: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vu_42vnUFPM Even with its flaws, I'm really tempted but I don't know what the situation with it is. Battle Orders never received their stock because UC halted/recalled them...

Re: United Cutlery's - The Hobbit - Movie Props!

Back to the replicas, has anyone else who's purchased the UC Orcrist got the same issue as me? Essentially where the hilt meets the blade there is a significant gap of maybe 1 to nearing 2 mm between the blade & hilt piece on both sides. Unfortunately I am far from the blade at the moment, so ca...

Re: United Cutlery's - The Hobbit - Movie Props!

Thanks SO much Kit. I am so glad I asked, and to get such detail from someone with your e xp erience sends me on the correct path. I think I know what I need to buy, and you suggestion of baby oil, seems to be the trick. As found on an Aussie site here: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.c...
Reissues always have the same item number as before. They are not made yet, so no one has them. I have no idea when, but sometime later this year they should be in stock. Damascus blades should be treated the same as carbon steel blades. To prevent corrosion, ...
I think this will probably be the last time United will ever make a run of Anduril scabbards, so if you want one... I just reviewed the prototypes last week to be sure they match the old production. I suggested a few things, but they were very close already. ...

Re: United Cutlery's - The Hobbit - Movie Props!

Just ordered Orcrist from a local supplier as a birthday present to me for next week. It's the first MiddleEarth blade I have purchased since 2008, when I was able to get the High Elven Warrior Sword. Since that time the only other item was the Witch-King's helm. I must say, it's sad to hear about a...
