Re: UC redesigns website, & sneak peak at Isildur's sword!
Even Denethor's sword looks more gondorian then boromir's. Boromir's looks more rohan then gondor
I don't see Rohan in Boromir's sword at all... This is getting really interesting; I'm making a new thread! See you there! > Design Similarities in...

Design Similarities in TLotR Film

This thread is dedicated to the appreciation of the design similarities within cultures, as seen in the TLotR film-props.
It would make sense that Isildur and Boromir would have similar swords, being both of Gondorian lineage... you would think that ther...

Re: UC redesigns website, & sneak peak at Isildur's sword!

No, I doubt the original props were too similar. If anything, Boromir's sword and Narsil, according to Tolkien, should look alike. But I think that the red-handled sword we now know as Isildur's was originally designed for Boromir, as it shares design aspects with Narsil. ...And the brown-handled sw...

Re: UC redesigns website, & sneak peak at Isildur's sword!

It's looking great! I've been looking forward to this for years, and wow! I thought we'd see Faramir's and Éomer's long before this one, but that's hardly something to complain about. Seriously, remember how Grima would always go on about the Wormtongue dagger? Yeah, that's how badly this one hooked...

Re: United cutlery 2009

Hi guys! I just got an e-mail from a local dealer about the UC2598, and had to poke my head in. The Sword of Isildur! I've been quietly hoping for this one for years , and am very excited about the news. (I just spent a couple of hours catching up on new posts over the past 5 months.) Let's see, wha...

Re: Indiana Jones IV

Olorin, you took the words right out of my mouth. Most everything I had to say was covered in your post. KotCS was, (contrary to some critic's opinions), Indiana Jones as only Spielberg could do. Sequels are tricky territory, and Steven & Co. knew that from the get-go. The film turned out just r...

Re: LOTR EE soundtrack

I bought it also, via pre-order. Although I think the very best music was put on the original relase, it's nice to have all those little gems, along with everything else. Now that all three full scores are released, I wonder what we'll see, considering the availability of technology nowadays. For in...

Re: And in with the new!

What a coincidence.... After being away for a fortnight or so, I am back via a new laptop! I have been "getting by" on 550M-cpu and 248M-ram for some time. (It takes 4 minutes just to start the thing.) Now, in about 90 seconds, I am up and running on 2G-cpu and 3G-ram. It's not the best th...

Re: Frostmourne Hungers!

It looks great! Kit was involved in this one, right? I like the way it was translated from the screen. (Too much accuracy can be a bad thing sometimes, you know?) Very nice! I'd never heard of an "authenticity microchip" in a sword. That's interesting, but with all the details on this piec...

Re: Weapon ideas for upcoming Hobbit movie & LOTR prequels

Not bad at all! I think we all agree Orcrist will be a Glamdring-like hand½ rather than a curved Hadhafang-like saber. (I hope PJ & Weta think so, too.) Although it will have to be usable by a Dwarf, it can't be "custom-made" for Dwarven use. It doesn't have to be stocky or heavy in de...

Re: Pure Middle-Earth discussion.

I've read about "Europe as Middle-earth", and seen a few map-overlays. I'm not sure if the Lauterbrunnental or the Silberhorn correspond appropriately, but I doubt that's important. It gets pretty difficult, trying to line up the geography, anyway. It's the look of these locations that lar...

Re: Weapon ideas for upcoming Hobbit movie & LOTR prequels

Sting is another thing altogether. It is not so richly adorned according to the text, and Elrond seems to overlook it. It's just a humble Elven-knife in a leather sheath. Apparently nameless, Bilbo gives it one, "Sting." (Not a very Elvish-sounding name is it?) The fact that Bilbo names it...

Re: Weapon ideas for upcoming Hobbit movie & LOTR prequels

In the film, Glamdring and Sting have small similarities, but are still quite different. They both have a leaf-shaped blade. Both have a forward-curving cross-guard. Other than that, it seems that anything goes. Leather-wrapped grip vs. wood w/silver inlay. Pommel style. Sting has an asymmetrical gu...

Re: Pure Middle-Earth discussion.

That looks about right to me! Wikipedia claims that Tolkien actually based Rivendell partly on the Lauterbrunnental. I was reading about the Battle of the Peak recently, and found that Tolkien called the Silberhorn "the Silvertine (Celebdil) of my dreams". You know, I'd like to see a list,...

Re: Pure Middle-Earth discussion.
Urambo, I believe you misread the article. It wasn't Gambon who dissed our beloved Sir Ian, but Richard Harris. And since Harris has shuffled off the mortal coil, you'll have to consult your favorite medium to learn if he still holds the opinion. (A quip perhaps...

Re: Pure Middle-Earth discussion.

That's interesting; thanks! I find it odd that Gambon is referred to as an unknown at the time of casting for Dumbledore. He was quite accomplished well before then. (IMDb states that he is an "antique weapon enthusiast". I say he has good taste. :thumbs_up ) I'm sorry to hear his comment ...

Re: Amateur Replicas

The plaque in the first pic looks like it came from a knock-off FKoL. (It's fun to use knock-offs for projects!) Interesting texture on the sword; what is it? The one in the second pic- is that one of Cloud's AC swords? How much does it weigh? Did you use aluminium? Third one- That thing is a monster!

Re: Strider's Coat

I bought one of those. It's real nice. The are a few minute inaccuracies, but it's really not bad. I removed the "merchandise" patch from mine and wear it as a regular duster. The leather is "smooth" on the outside, but is heavily cracked to give it its appearance. The coat (jack...

Re: New LOTR dvds

Yep, that's exactly what I was waiting for!

You know, I never did get into those HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray debates. Has it ever been determined which is better? I'm aware that may be a subjective issue.

I really don't plan on buying both.

Re: LOTR EE soundtrack
I don't suppose they would release all three together in one complete package? I'd rather buy all three together, rather than buy them individually. I haven't been following this thread nor any of the information on the EE Soundtracks. Are they worth it??[/quote...

Re: The Hobbit

I thought the idea of nameless dwarves was that they would technically have names in the credits and for scripting purposes, but would not be mentioned in the film. That's the hard part of adapting The Hobbit . It is a children's story, and removing elements like the rhyming names changes the "...

Re: The Hobbit

I wish I could have been there to hear the audience reactions. :D (Argh, I had to scroll w/ my screen, too.) I was surprised by some of the speculations, but there are a lot of interesting suggestions.

BTW, Olorin, a thousand thanks for posting these updates here!

Re: Pure Middle-Earth discussion.

TCoH was very good. I'd read the Silmarillion account before, but having not read Unfinished Tales , I was new to the "fleshed-out" Narn . I suppose when suggesting TCoH to other people a disclaimer should be given, "don't e xp ect a happy ending." ;) Its a good thing to have th...

Re: LOW prices... trustworthy?

Ditto on what GW just said. On a good note, it's nice to see attempts at replicas that UC never made. I like that someone actually tried to make the hard sheath for Hadhafang. I wonder if it would fit the UC version? What they call "Sam's dagger" is also an interesting try. (Of course, we ...

Re: Long time no see

Glad to see you back, J. Yeah, things have gotten pretty slow around here, but that's to be e xp ected. There's not much in the UC or TLotR worlds to discuss. I must admit I've become something of a lurker here, checking in only about once a week. But, due to the low activity, it doesn't take long t...

Re: Sting boxes?

Hmm... What about the UC stamp on the blades? Didn't some of the first ones specify TFotR , rather than "The Lord of the Rings" in general? My UC1264(Sting) came in one of the blue boxes, and carries the TLotR: TFotR stamp. Was it ever released in a brown box or did its production end in t...

Re: New LOTR dvds

That's right. I think I prefer that over swapping discs. They stop at the same half-way point as the EE DVDs. But, you still have to flip the disc over for the other half of the theatrical version. So, if you're watching the theatrical version, it's a little inconvenient. But if you're watching the ...

Re: The Hobbit

He's "emotion", huh? I hope that that Glamdring prop of his is one of the safety versions! “I regret losing a friend,” he said, as he showed a visitor a Gandalf sword that Mr. Jackson had sent him as a gift, before the lawsuit. On the serious side, maybe PJ really should sit down a...

Re: Eowyn's sword arrived

Mahy? Really? One of these days, I'll pull out the dvd's and certificates of autheticity and nail down who designed what. That's interesting. Those were some great pics! Usually when my new ones arrive, they also go back in the box. (No display room, dusty old house, etc.) But they do get pulled out...

Re: The Hobbit

I wonder if there is any credibility at all with New Line's reasoning. Is it remotely possible that it is actually PJ & co. who are the ones being stubborn? My first reaction, of coure, is that PJ's right, NL execs are wrong. But, I simply don't know enough about the situation. :| I guess I coul...
