Re: CJRT may spin in his grave….

Thanks.... US edition publisher: ‎ William Morrow UK publisher is, per typical, HarperCollins I don't know anything about William Morrow publishing House, absolutely nothing about the physical quality of their hardcover books. However, it's a good bet that the editors have Americanized the spelling ...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

Possibly...or even probably. But I'm on a few other SDCC feeds as well. And Phoenix just had its Phoenix Fan Fusion (or maybe it's Phoenix Phan Phusion...or Foenix Fan Fusion....nevermind..) It used to be called Phoenix Comic Con until the SDCC legal beagles were let off their leashes to make a rabi...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

In general I was thinking of what they did with the Treebeard statue....that teaser where someone was carrying/stacking cartons that had "leaves" sticking out. And now that you mention it I do recall it being on FB. But I don't remember how far in advance of SDCC they did that.

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

Not sure if there isn't an existing [general] thread for this but is there anything/teasers from Weta about what will be showcased at the SDCC? Pretty certain that whatever it is I won't be getting it. But I'm curious nonetheless, because we are still in the 20th Anniversary window. (If there alread...

Re: New Tolkien-adjacent book, The Great Tales Never End

Re: RIP, Vangelis

Ah, yes, "lifted" music, and also not the first to do it. Go to the 1:43 marker for this (You could start at the beginning, but it starts out in a pretty slow tempo, maybe largo or adagio ) Geminiani (this one), Corelli, Vivaldi, and I don't know how many others (Wikipedia says 150), on up...

Re: RIP, Vangelis

@ Olorin (but not exclusively)
Go here and listen to the music.
(You don't have to listen to the whole thing.)
Then tell me what it reminds you of.

Re: Tolkien as Artist

So.... JRR Tolkien: Artist and Illustrator showed up. I read it in the last two days. Pretty interesting... the [text] sections dealing with the art for The Hobbit and LOTR draw heavily on his Letters . But, now that I've seen it I probably won't be buying it, at least not for $150. I am not a colle...

Re: Tolkien as Artist

And of course as soon as you posted, I remember having seen that before. I don’t have that edition of the books, but I have seen it. I never really liked that cover, because it makes it look like a Christmas tree. Did you see as a dust jacket, or did you just see it somewhere else, such as in one o...

Re: Tolkien as Artist

So, returning to our regularly scheduled programming.... Tolkien did, in fact, make a drawing of the White Tree, to be used as cover art for The Return of the King . I went to here to see what I could learn about "house sigils" and found this: The emblem of Elendil and his heirs was seven ...

Re: Tolkien as Artist

I suppose I erroneously assumed that since we are somewhat close to the same age and I first visited Middle-earth as a relatively young person, you did as well. But it sounds like your own first encounter definitely worked out well for you. I have mostly pleasant memories of high school, or at leas...

Re: Tolkien as Artist

OK, I just took a look and came up with nothing (which doesn't mean I couldn't have overlooked it). I'm surprised that you, as someone who'll spend the extra bucks to get the UK edition of Tolkien books, hasn't acquired his art books. They are all very worth having, as they really enrich our pictur...

Re: Tolkien as Artist

I have that book, plus several other Tolkien art books, so if I get a chance, I’ll flip through them to see what’s in there. However, I don’t think that necessarily everything he ever drew has been released to the public in a book. Oh, that would be nice of you. But I'll still keep my library reque...

Re: Tolkien as Artist

I was curious if Tolkien had ever made any drawing(s) of the White Tree. I couldn't find anything online. So I have requested (through the municipal library) a copy of J.R.R. Tolkien: Artist and Illustrator , edited by Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull, pub. by HoughtonMifflin. There are numerous...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

... I actually did! I found a blacksmith on Instagram who was making pans and able to take custom orders. It wasn't cheap as it came all the way from the UK. It is a heavy duty hand forged piece and you could definitely kill an orc or two with it. You can order one by messaging him on Facebook or I...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

... It wouldn't do to lose a gift from your grandfather-in-law. :club: Celeborn gave Aragorn his knife? I thought both Galadriel and Celeborn gave Aragorn his gifts. I am going by the book and not the movie. And in the book there wasn't any Elven knife given to Strider; G-and-C gave Aragorn the She...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

Had to check out the new Weta "Surfing Strider" as I had not seen an pics of it (because I wasn't looking for pics of it). I'll not be buying it --easy pass-- for the same reasons I don't buy most [LOTR] statues... space and budget. But, I'll still mini- critique it. I think it looks very ...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

... What I do know for a fact is that both Viggo and Elijah Wood seem to be two of the hardest faces for these companies to somehow get just right. Maybe it's because both the actors were (imo) totally....wait for it.....miscast. (Yes, I know, an egregious non sequitur , but it's the spirit of JRRT...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

...It looks really good. I may need a second Aragorn in my collection. I'm going to wait, though, to see what else Weta reveals later this year. If this summer/fall are anything like last year, I'll need to dig deep into my wallet. Buckeye, which Aragorn statue do you have? No need to post a pic (I...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

OK...was just wondering...thanks. No worries, and sorry if that turned into a rant. I just seem to have bad luck selling stuff when others seem to do it so easily. Oh, no worries right back at you.. I didn't pick up anything you said as a rant. It's too bad (and sad, really) that people aren'...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

... Will order for sure, but with an Open Edition and Q1'23 release, there's zero rush. Gives me plenty of time to try and sell the SSW one, though I'm having zero luck with oflloading Legolas and Gimli. Scant love out there for the older pieces. VAl, how do you usually sell your stuff? Ebay? Craig...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

Someone should try using 99% alcohol and the ink. I originally got the 99% stuff through the Wally World pharmacy (I use it in my electronics projects). But I found it cheaper (per oz) online, amazon I think. If 91% works better than 70% it might be worth a try using the 99% alcohol. And also you ne...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

Could it be that I am a new collector, because I still have that snobbism that Valkrist comments. :P Maybe over time I'll get used to them and accept the plastic replicas a little more, I don't know. ;) ... What would worry me is its durability, I'm quite wary of soft plastics and poly-leathers. Mo...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

ooooooo...you will get to see... "The Desk" ! :O Sadly, no, as we agreed to meet halfway in the state somewhere. We're doing one of those back alley shady deals where Andrew is wearing a trench coat and sunglasses and as discretely as possible, hands me over this ginormous box when no one...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

I'll happily trade your $100 TB for my $450 TB because, due to the double box, weight, and size, had to come via UPS, which is basically highway robbery disguised as a shipping service. Just spoke to a friend of mine here in Vancouver who also ordered Bilbo and his shipping will be $150 usd, or rou...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

So...another notice from Weta about the Bilbo Statue.... The statue is on its way to the Seattle warehouse, and my CC will be charged for the balance around 4 March. AND... they have posted the shipping cost. Just so you can see how this has been altered (as has much else) by the pandemic: Treebeard...

Re: Pure Middle-Earth discussion.

If I were to upgrade then yes, I would go for the UHD discs. Also, I didn't know about the "super re-mastering" to UHD of the classics (B&W or color). Thanks for letting me know about that. Just an aside (another one)... The opening scene of Psycho where Janet Leigh is looking out of t...

Re: Pure Middle-Earth discussion.

@XerachCruz: Going by what I see (of your examples) on MY screen...BD is underwhelming...a definite 'pass' for me. The UHD does look good but for me it's not so different from the the DVD example..res is better (duh!) but the colors are not so different. Also, I watch a lot, and I mean a lot , of cl...

Re: Pure Middle-Earth discussion.

I still keep them, they are one of my greatest treasures and I think that better editions have never been published than those (perhaps the edition of the shelf was better, but I don't have that one because in my country it was never published). When I have a while I could see if I can find it for ...

Re: Pure Middle-Earth discussion.

Well, some of us still have the DVDs and never did buy the BDs. Now, I haven't looked at the "extras" disc at all, but if you really did see it, we DVD types should be able to still see it, thereby assuring you that you are not imagining things. Except that I can't watch the DVD at the mom...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

I also received a "heads up" shipping notice for the Bilbo statue. All it said was: your order is arriving to our local US shipping hub and will be ready to dispatch over the next few weeks! That still gives me a bit of time to: 1) Clear some space for it, and 2) Find the dang shoehorn :ro...

Re: The Rings Of Power

Not sure how you attached those, but all I see are the file names, not images. As for a good story? No hope of that for me. Now that it's revealed this show is only loosely borrowing the names of Tolkien characters to tell a completely fictional tale that Tolkien never wrote but apparently should h...

Re: The Rings Of Power

... The vast majority of the response that I’ve seen is definitely racist in its rhetoric and drowns out the genuine criticisms of this series. Instead of it being “this is a massive change to Galadriel’s character” it’s some reiteration of “why are there black people???!???” ... Lindir, did you wa...
