Re: Expert Swordsman Analyzes LOTR

Thank you both for your comments. I had no knowledge of Matt Easton or his school Schola Gladiatoria Way back in the early 80s, BC (Before Computers), when I was in my 20s I took fencing lessons, and then joined the local club. I did that for 3 or 4 years and got pretty good at it... won some tourna...

Re: Expert Swordsman Analyzes LOTR

Never heard of him before I saw the vid, but I quickly surmised that he was a pro at what he does and had likely done many other analyses on sword-and-sorcery / sword-and-sandal movies. But I didn't know if anyone else here knew about him. Honestly, if there were ever a reason (or several reasons) f...

Expert Swordsman Analyzes LOTR

This new Youtube vid (dated 15 Aug) is fascinating. He analyzes the weapons, the style of fighting, the tactics, the realism (or not). The narrator focuses on specific scenes from The Fellowship. This is absolutely worth watching in its entirety (about 30 minutes long). One thing is readily apparent...

Tolkien Books etc

Just got this notice from ABE books about Tolkien's books.
It's partly an ad for selling the books (ABE is a secondhand bookseller) but there is other info that readers new to Tolkien may find helpful.
For most of us there's nothing new.
Still, for what it is worth go here

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

Looks great, as always....(running out of superlatives to describe your work :D ) and a definite improvement. Why did you use gel stain? Not criticizing your choice, but I always wonder why people use gel stain and not "normal" penetrating stain. The only reason I can think of is t...

Re: Attack at the Prancing Pony

No... Not a trick question, not do I want to start a Trivia Thread. (Altho' as a mod, you may do that with my question, i.e. move it to a new "Trivia " thread.) I asked the question because I was curious to know if anyone else other than moi thought it was the Nazgul who made the attack. I...

Re: Congratulations!

OK... I started the "what I'd do with the umpteen millions" (lump sum payout after taxes), so Val is right about us raining on his parade. So as far as the cost of living being astronomical, well, he has millions. If he can afford his own island the C-of-L is a factor not even worth consid...

Re: Congratulations!

Do you know what really was the most difficult part, psychologically, in living in the tropics (island or not) was that there are no seasons such as we are used to. Oh, Hawaii has a "winter"...." there are more storms, and violent ones, compared to the regular (non-hurricane) ones in ...

Re: Congratulations!

...Actually, the ticket was sold in Des Plaines, a Chicago suburb. An old college friend lives in a nearby suburb so I texted him and said, it wasn't you, was it? He replied that he couldn't answer that until he had talked to his lawyer. Any time I read the name Des Plaines (and I lived in ...

Re: Congratulations!

Did you mean a tropical island? Or an island in less tropical climes? Iceland is an island. Likewise the Hebrides (both Inner and Outer) and the Orkneys, none of which are tropical. (And I know you mean your own private island) HAve you ever lived in the tropics for an extended period of time? I liv...

Re: Congratulations!

Playing "what if..." I would buy an absolutely huge chunk of land in some foothills of the Rockies, have a 3000 sq ft cabin built (post and beam of course), and well I'd have to think some more about what else I'd have in it, or not have. And "I am with you Gandalf!" I mean Olori...

Congratulations!

Well, Olorin.... I just read the news! :jump:
So you can retire right now!... Post haste!
Any other immediate plans (besides meeting with your financial advisor)?
And I hope that you will * ahem* not forget your less fortunate, yet nonetheless loyal, longtime friends here on UCForums :inlove:

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

Funny you should mention the time lag between order and delivery. I just went to the Weta site a few hours ago (before seeing your post) to check the status of the Argonath. I had a horrifying thought that (for whatever reason) Weta had canceled my order and never told me. However, that is, happily,...

Re: Robot goes rogue

Did the kid actually cheat? I read that he went to move his piece too soon. Now, if he did that deliberately knowing it was breaking the rules, well, that is when the robot should hit the kid with the Gort Super Destructo Ray Beam. Gort (Mile marker 1:28) But if the kid was just over-anxious (and wh...

Robot goes rogue

As one wag put it: "So much for Asimov's 3 Laws of Robotics" Robot breaks kid's finger jeez louise....look how many adults it takes to free the kid! Damn scary! :O Sergey Lazarev, the president of the Moscow Chess Federation said, “The robot broke the child’s finger," and then added, ...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

Doesn't matter to me at the moment because I have the "contemplative Isildur" which I do like a lot. Wow. That is an understatement for my opinion of the Isildur statue. It is top 5 for me. I just love love love it.... Well, it is in my top four because....I only have four statues!** :lau...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

Very excited about Elendil and will be a day 1 order. I hope it's a timed window release just like Sauron so everyone who wants one gets one. As for another Isildur piece, I highly doubt they will make another. I mean it only took 20 years to Elendil and the eventual Gil-Galad. There is another 4 o...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

So, if Weta also makes an Isidlur statue that would fit with this (all but officially announced and advertised as such) diorama how do you think Isildur would be posed? The current Isildur statue is contemplating the Ring which obviously is after Sauron's defeat. (And if anyone here is wondering why...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

omg.... I thought I could easily pass on any statue of Elendil....but that thing is amazing. Will have to wait for the price but, WOW, just amazing, so well done. :O Addendum: pretty sure I'll cave on this and get it, even though I don't have the Sauron statue that pairs with it. If the GG statute l...

Re: Fahrenheit 451 (Book)

Asimov didn’t fly either. If he couldn’t get there by car or train, he wasn’t going. Supposedly only flew twice. Maybe Bradbury was OK with trains...some of his short stories involve characters riding trains. Then again some of his characters drive cars too... and fly. It's funny tho' about his not...

Re: Fahrenheit 451 (Book)

I seem to remember something about the recent movie, primarily that it was pretty bad. I think 20 years ago (it was before he had his "problems") Mel Gibson wanted to make a movie of it with himself directing, but also in the protagonist role (which I would have had no problem with... he w...

Re: Fahrenheit 451 (Book)

Back to Fahrenheit 451.... I just read it...again.... for the (I don't know) 20th(?) time. I guess I was 12-14 or thereabouts when I first read it, so that means that on average I read it every 2-3 years. Kind of like LOTR, except I came to that at a much later age (as I mentioned in another thread)...

Re: Fahrenheit 451 (Book)

With the housing market the way it is in Phoenix I wouldn't have any problem selling the house... maybe settle for a few thousand less if the ceiling is still popcorn. And as far as having a professional remove it? ... Around 1990 I talked to people who do drywall work. Everyone of them told me 1) i...

Re: Fahrenheit 451 (Book)

Asbestos is only dangerous if/when it breaks apart. As long as it isn't disturbed it just sits there and doesn't do anything. And you can be certain that whoever paid $22K for that edition is not going to be handling it much, if at all, and not because the cover contains asbestos. It's probably goin...

Fahrenheit 451 (Book)

Saw this in my feed from ABE books... An asbestos bound copy of Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 was auctioned. I never knew there was such an edition... but (you must admit) it makes eminent sense to bind that particular book in fire proof material. :D (Moi is the proud owner of the SF Book Club edition--...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

Honest question: why does it matter? If you like the piece, then buy it. For me, liking it (and how affordable it is), are things that come first. Edition size is a distant third. The edition size is only important for two things: resale value, and the feeling of owning something extremely rare. Wh...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

... I really like this MC ... I like that it transports me to a scene. A feeling I have when they are in the marshes. I am trying to talk myself out of it but I have so many enablers. And now with my good health news, maybe I feel like splurging. Any idea as to price? (ballpark number would do) And...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

Hi all. Long time no post I know but I have excuses. I hope you are all well and enjoying summer. It has been very cold here this winter. Too much ground water makes for a cold winter. ... Idril...are you in Brisbane? (I seem to recall you saying that a few years back). But I guess it doesn't matte...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

Thanks for the reply....I see your point as it is quite different from the normal "display concept" orientation. But for me (and regardless if it's evil stuff or not) the appeal is finally "Does it imaginatively transport me to [JRRT's] ME?" Treebeard, definitley...Bilbo at Bag E...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

Uh....I'm impressed...really, really impressed. The Dead Marshes rivals Treebeard in it's visual impact, in evoking "the real thing". (Although I do wish one of the "dead things" had some rusting armour on it). If I had more space (and didn't have my typical visceral reaction to ...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

Oh yeah, I forgot about your aversion to 'dead things'. Oh, it's more like "evil things" than "dead things". Evil is a metaphysical thing... a dead body is just a factual thing...can be a dead body of a good person or dead body of an evil person, but finally it is merely...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

This could actually be really well done, a pretty impressive piece with respect to the Lore. But to do that it would have to show a "dead thing" under the water, specifically an elf in his armour (as was done in the movie). Then you would get a historical perspective of the place...it's no...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

Getting ahead of the game a little bit, but I guess all of you have seen the latest blurb from Weta about the Master's Collection sculpt of the Dead Marshes scene. And I seem to recall a previous blurb about, but I could be mistaken. Comments are probably flying on FoU. Anyway...the cash cow continu...

Re: Happy 4th of July!

Most people who shoot off morter style shells buy Class C; they aren't a really large display, they don't go very high...maybe 100 ft at most. They cost between $10 and $20 per shell. If you buy in bulk it will be less than $10 per bang. They are nice for a block party type celebration , or if you h...

Re: Happy 4th of July!

I'm nearly surrounded by commercial grade or almost commercial grade fireworks going off. A mile and a half east of my house the city (Mesa) has its formal 4th display which I can see at about 30 deg above the horizon, high enough to clear the rooftops. Straight north of me at less than a half mile ...

Re: Happy 4th of July!

Bumping this (sort of) ... As I post this it's still the 4th of July in western parts of the US, Alaska and Pacific locales Yep...Happy 4th to all A M E R I C A N S at home and abroad! And I'm celebrating by way of honoring Benjamin Franklin**, in that I am having a beer...or three. **Inter...

Re: CJRT may spin in his grave….

Random thought… I think when I was in grad school and the history of middle earth volumes were beginning to come out that I reflected on how interesting it was that new material was being published from an author who had been dead for over 10 years. Now here we are 40 years after that, and new work...
