Etsy seller 'TheNeedleAndBlade'

Don't know if this is the right section, feel free to move if so! Some of you may have come across this seller on Easy, possibly through Adam Savage (tested) video which mentions them. They produce(d) a replica of striders ranger belt, which Adam recommended in his video. I was in touch with the sel...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

Setting release dates before films are made puts unnecessary pressure on the production. That and the fact that TH was written and filmed as two films, and then chopped into three after wrap. A few weeks of additional footage was shot, but it really does bear there hallmarks of it being two films st...

Re: United Cutlery's - The Hobbit - Movie Props!

Did anyone else take advantage of the BUDK flash sale promo code last week? I snagged the Morgul Dagger for $34.99! It should be arriving today. I don't really care for the "bad guys'" weapons, but for $35 I think it would have been dumb not to get it. I ordered two to the UK. One for my ...

Re: United Cutlery's - The Hobbit - Movie Props!

Still, I think it is fitting of the culture that made it. Oh come on Kit, we British aren't all bad ...... Just kidding I know you mean in-universe. I completely agree, I've never been a fan of the designs, not anywhere near as much as those from LOTR. No they’re not bad, please don’t think I’m say...

Re: United Cutlery's - The Hobbit - Movie Props!

I’m very nervous about the show. And I can’t imagine the sword designs being very good. Even GOT swords fall short in my opinion and GOT has a massive budget. I wish they were adapting the Silmarillion and not doing a FOTR prequel. I’ll be buying Bard’s sword and hopefully one day things like Haldi...

Re: United Cutlery's - The Hobbit - Movie Props!

Thanks for that info Kit. Oh to get a steel and wood version!! That sounds insane (though I understand the cost reasons why it wasn't done) - I've recently begun converting my polyresin version - I've filled the screw holes and have begun adding a real oak veneer over the print areas. wish me luck!

Re: United Cutlery's - The Hobbit - Movie Props!

A good theory, Jamie, but how then do you explain Sting? I don't own the Hobbit version but every photo I've seen shows that it matches the LOTT one in scale. Scabbard as well. Axelorque also says Fili's and Kili's swords appear to be the correct ME scale, and given their small size, I'm inclined t...

Re: United Cutlery's - The Hobbit - Movie Props!

I imagine Kit might be able to enlighten us on this, perhaps it is a licensing thing? The original LOTR items are 'Middle Earth' Scale (exception: Sauron) - i.e. the size the items are if you were to visit ME as a human. The fact that the Hobbit items (Dwarven items at least) are coming out at 'buil...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

I wouldn't be surprised if this ends up as the only figure produced in this line .... if the sales don't go as planned, would they really invest in another figure which would likely hit the £2000+ mark? I imagine gollum was chosen partly because he's essentially naked - only a torn cloth and no weap...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

The price of their stuff these days is a real put off. I work in film myself, and as such have a fairly healthy income, but given that I'm saving for a deposit on a house/paying rent and the upkeep of a car, I can't ever justify the ever-increasing prices of their statues. I own a couple, but nowada...

Re: LOTR TV adaptation

A billion dollars would probably be a multi-series deal (the rough outline of a seven series story arc would be pitched and budgeted for) - But at this early stage these figures being thrown around are pure speculation. In other news, filming of the significantly lower budget Tolkien biopic is well ...

Re: United Cutlery's - The Hobbit - Movie Props!

BUDK No longer ship internationally I now realise, and my UK supplier (Battle Orders) haven't added anything new to their page in 6 months. Anyone know of any other reputable suppliers in the UK who have got some of the recent products (I really wanna get the elven pole arm) Thranduils frog looks ace!

Re: RIP, John Hurt

Arwyniel wrote:He was also the voice of the dragon in the Merlin series.
I did a bit of work on that show at the start of my career. Knowing he was involved was the main attraction to it. Such a shame.

Re: United Cutlery's - The Hobbit - Movie Props!

oh how I would love to get items at these prices .... The Rivendell elf helm, the Black arrow, the sword of Thranduil & the elven pole arm would cost me $660 Thru BUDK, here in the UK I'm looking to buy them all, and the price here for those items is .... $1183 plus shipping! This is why my coll...

Re: The Huntsman: Winter's War

I saw it the other day, my girlfriend worked on it (I'm working with the same team now on 'The Mummy') so perhaps I'm biased, but I quite enjoyed it! I agree it's not Oscar worthy, and some parts are clearly stolen from other films (Chastains back-draw daggers and general look - Tauriel anyone?) but...

Re: Theoden helm progress

Some really amazing work done here Jamie!. Your Theoden helm is coming along nicely and your work on the Uruk-hai shield is great. I'm really curious about the Rohan shield, did you make that one totally from scratch as well as I have not seen it before? Also I'm not sure if you have said or not, b...

Re: Theoden helm progress

So, Apologies for the delay! I've recently started working on the remake of 'The Mummy' and this is naturally taking up most of my time! In what free time I do find, I have been busy working away on various personal projects. Forever guilty of beginning a new project before finishing the last one, t...

Re: Theoden helm progress

Well, here's the first picture, I've cold-cast the cheek plates. I hope to refine these, and need to age and paint them. The helm is at home (I'm at my parents for Christmas) so I'll add photos of that at the weekend! Hoping to leather-line it over the coming week, and add the side pieces. Then I ju...

Re: Theoden helm progress

Hello all, Apologies for the delay in an update, life just likes to get in the way I guess! I've given casting the helm in cold cast brass a go, and the results are fantastic, much closer to the original. I've also sculpted and moulded the cheek plates, which I hope to pull the first casts from tomo...

Re: Theoden helm progress

Thanks all! That's a shame N2darkness, I didn't realise they were only based here! I think it was the electric light that made the colour look weird, I'll do some Better pictures in natural light next time. Dark Shadow, I don't really know what my next project will be, I tend to focus on them one at...

Re: Theoden helm progress

Hello! It's been a while since I've posted here, been away on a film project so haven't had time to do much work on this. Thought I'd post pictures for you all to see, of my nearing completion Theoden Helm. I've painted this one up, I'm working on the cheek pieces and crests, hoping to have them don...

Re: Theoden helm progress

No worries N2, yeah curator ageing fluid works wonders in metal, I'm guessing Montana gold has metallic powder in it as it seems to age that down too. You can get a whole range of 'dirty down' sprays that we swear by on set, great for ageing down pretty much anything. Just got some better resin deli...

Re: Theoden helm progress

Thanks! I haven't finalised how I'll paint these yet, but so far it is as follows: Undercoat Montana Black - Gold spray all over Curator ageing fluid (black) - washed all over Rustoleum acrylic paint 'Pewter' - for the steel parts Games Workshop 'Boltgun Metal' - stippled over the top Rustoleum 'Old...

Re: Theoden helm progress

Thanks for the feedback, great to hear the opinions of other enthusiasts! I did indeed sculpt/make it myself (I work in film for a living so I can't quite claim to not have a little background knowledge of this sort of stuff :coolsmile ) based it around a polystyrene head, and spent the odd weekend ...

Theoden helm progress

Hello all, hope everyone is well!! I haven't posted here for a while, busy working and all! I've been lurking every few days, got to keep up with current affairs here! finally found some time to make some progress on my Theoden helm, pulled a rough cast for painting tests .... any tips/thoughts appr...

Re: United Cutlery's - The Hobbit - Movie Props!
Don't give up :) I think you should still go ahead with your replica, it'll be interesting to see how you tackle it and what different approaches you may take :) best of luck!
Thanks for the boost Lindir! Given that the only other helm I've made was the...

Re: United Cutlery's - The Hobbit - Movie Props!

Anaplasma studios - a quick google and I found them. Never heard of anyone dealing with them so wouldn't wanna recommend/warn either way, but these guys were the ones who made the mouth of sauron helm (they also did a guard of the citadel helmet for a while, no idea if they still sell anything) On a...

Re: Custom Made Movie Items

Here's a few more images :) I'm thinking of doing a Theoden helm for my next project, has anyone tried this before? If so, any hints or tips? Much appreciated :) http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/202/dsc8619w.jpg/ http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/854/dsc8618j.jpg/ http://imageshack.us/photo/m...

Re: Custom Made Movie Items

Sounds good, from my point of view any work in this industry is guaranteed to be fun! I've done work e xp erience, but I just can't wait to start working in the industry properly as soon as I can! Yeah of course, constructive criticism is good criticism, when I've got more done I'll get some picture...

Re: Custom Made Movie Items

Unfortunately we don't no, the official title of the course is 'Film and TV set design' and it focuses on concept/development/design of sets, we have to produce the technical drawings for our sets and produce scale models, nothing actually gets built and no prop making :/ As such, all the things I m...

Re: Custom Made Movie Items

Thanks N2, I'm glad this one worked out. I've still got the molds etc for this one so I may attempt variations of this helm, perhaps vary the master mold and create a berserker one. that, and a Rohan Royal Shield perhaps. I'd love to do the three Uruk/Galadhrim/Rohan helmets some day! It all depends...

Re: Custom Made Movie Items

Hi all, I haven't posted in a while, been busy with Uni work. Been regularly checking on here as its good to see some of the discussions. Just wanted to share my latest hand made replica! mid-way through making this I saw Kit Rae post some photo's of things UC had considered in the past, which made ...

Re: United Cutlery's - The Hobbit - Movie Props!

Kit, I received my Hobbit UC Sting scabbard today, and I'm really pleased with it, I just have two questions. Firstly, I can't remember if this has been said or asked already so if it has then apologies, but mine didn't come with a certificate, so I just wanted to ask if these were meant to or not? ...

Re: The Hobbit

Agreed, such a moving video from Sir Christopher Lee. Kit, thankyou for keeping us updated with these tantalizing bits of information! Time to start saving those bits of paper again to buy some Hobbit replicas. If its already been asked then I apologize, but if not, can you tell us anything about th...
