Re: Sword Hangers

Wow, this is truly is stunning. I'm looking to hang my Hadhafang vertically like that again, but I want to be able to mount it on its original plaque. I actually was just about to make my own post here asking for some tips until I saw this thread pop up. I don't suppose you were able to keep Hadhaf...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

It took a little while for me to warm up to Boromir. I didn't like him at first (which is a testament to Sean Bean's acting) but found him such a honorable and tragic character over the years and one of my favorite characters. Truthfully, I want all the main character weapons and even a lot of the g...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

These were a few photos posted on the other FOU forum. And from an angle you can definitely tell it is powder coated cold-cast. I'd still prefer that over paint, but just wish they would lean towards a material much likely to break of chip over time than rigid polyresin.

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

It's not a reissue. The UC2940 was limited to 1500 and I think they only made 800 or 900 of the first run. I'm not sure how many they are making for this run, but it's probably 300. I got two from the first run, way back in 2014. I thought they looked like garbage, so I asked the factory to send me...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

The Rohan axe is still in the sample stage, but looking good so far. It's huge! The Guthwine scabbard is moving along. A complete sample from tooling is on it's way to me now. It looked good from the photos I saw. The Faramir sword is not a rumor. I confirmed it here. It's in the early stages of de...

Re: LOTR movie trilogy 20th anniversary

Wasn't sure where else to post this but I'm in Calgary right now for the Fan Expo that is on for four days (attending all four), and on Saturday there's an event called Return of the Hobbits, and I will get to meet and have my photo taken with Wood, Astin, Boyd, and Monaghan. :thumbs_up Oh, and ton...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

FYI, Theodred's sword is now "in stock" at BudK. I already put in my order! https://www.budk.com/Lord-of-the-Rings-Sword-of-Th%C3%A9odred-Officially-Lic-50485 Awesome! Congrats! I read on FB that these are not "Limited Editions" (either a change, or a miscommunication initially)...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

The gear looks 100% accurate to me. Without looking at footage or pictures (this is the part where N2 swoops in with evidence), didn't Aragorn wear the Elven Knife at the back part of his waist? In a standing pose and with the cloak, it would not be visible, right? Thinking of the knife, it struck ...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

It's probably the closest, but I wouldn't call it perfect. Something about the mouth and lips doesn't quite say Viggo to me. To hear the way people are criticizing the new Weta Aragorn, you wouldn't think they're the same bunch that gushed over atrocities like Haldir, Frodo on Cart, and Boromir at ...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

...It looks really good. I may need a second Aragorn in my collection. I'm going to wait, though, to see what else Weta reveals later this year. If this summer/fall are anything like last year, I'll need to dig deep into my wallet. Buckeye, which Aragorn statue do you have? No need to post a pic (I...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

Thanks. Too bad BUDK doesn't ship outside of the US. :( As soon as they're available at Castle Kon, that will be my next purchase. It will be a bit more expensive with shipping costs and taxes when arriving here than buying it from a European store, but it won't be in stores here for many, many mon...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

Weta has revealed (partially) a new Strider 1/6 for their Classic Series. Any takers? The picture doesn't show the finished product, only the WIP, but I like what I see so far. Not a fan of the fact that this line is now at the $399 mark, but considering the improvement over the old SSW version and...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

Awesome, that's very helpful! How much of the white ink did you put in? A drop? Two? The one in Kit's photos looks much brighter but then I'm guessing it's because he has less ambient light going on in the background than you do? Sorry, I failed to mention that part! Only 1 drop for my mixture and ...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

So I tried another brand of ink I found at the local craft store (Ranger) and it worked. Also worked better with 91% alcohol than the 70% for me. 2022-04-03 19.42.46.jpg And here are the materials used and then a link to the white alcohol ink. 2022-04-03 21.45.03.jpg https://www.amazon.com/Ranger-TA...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

The brand I have is called DecorRom. I bought it from Amazon a few years back to color some epoxy resin castings I made. It was not very good ink for that, but works great for this. It dissolved into 70% Isopropyl rubbing alcohol instantly. Thanks for the info, I'll see if I can still order some.

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

That does look infinitely better and I'd like to try it once I receive mine. To be clear, what product are you using? I've never heard of 'white ink'. It's probably not paint, so what is it? A dye of some kind? It's white alcohol ink in rubbing alcohol. People usually use alcohol inks for tye dye-l...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

I think my frying pan joke was misunderstood. It was just a parody on UC's strategy for rereleasing a replica that was limited, releasing a new edition just adding an item to it, like with the new mace with the flag... Although if they released that edition, with a screen accured Sam's frying pan, ...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

The slightly white water looks much better. This is the first test I did. A bit too much dye. 25% less looks even better. The white balance of my iphone camera adds a bit of a blue tint, but there is no blue in person. http://www.kitrae.net/fantasy/images/Hobbit%201/IMG_4601.jpeg http://www.kitrae....

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

What (if anything) are you going to do with John's Phial? Good pics of Bilbo statue. I'm glad I got it. And N2, you need to copy that wainscoting and attach it to the walls in your collection room  John's Phial lives in my display coffee table and Weta's in a display case near Galadriel As f...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

Bilbo at His Desk (LE) arrived. :btr: Still have to unbox him....won't get to that until Saturday or Sunday. Shipping carton is in good shape. Hopefully there are no defects with the piece itself (fingers crossed). I received mine and Val's last week and it really is a great piece and Weta has done...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

Same here. I wish there was a way for UC to make something close to those in real world materials, but there really is not. They only existed for the films as painted Urethane props. United's poly factory says they can cast flexible urethane now, so maybe they can be done that way one day. It that'...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

I was talking to him on Instagram about that. That rerelease sword is a Scratch/Dent unit. Do you know if maybe the details of the guard are too worn because of that? Or is that the finish of the engraving on the new releases? I saw that, but I was messaged today by someone else who received their ...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

Wanted to show some comparison (mine from the original run 2001?) to the new run of the Witchking sword. I knew there was going to be a new pattern for the weathering on the blade, but is also appears to be not as dark as the original ones. Also the clean up and grinding of the cross guard / hilt is...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

I also received a "heads up" shipping notice for the Bilbo statue. All it said was: your order is arriving to our local US shipping hub and will be ready to dispatch over the next few weeks! That still gives me a bit of time to: 1) Clear some space for it, and 2) Find the dang shoehorn :r...

Re: The Rings Of Power

From the latest Vanity Fair article. "It’s worth remembering, if only for legal reasons, that this is not the exact same world. The production design, though similar, is not trying to match the Jackson films. For example, King Elendil’s legendary broken sword, Narsil, which debuted on one of P...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

Thanks for the program. Until now, for large jobs, after designing it in 3D, I take the dimensions of the design and redraw them on the wood to be cut, which requires a lot of extra technical drawing work. This program is very useful. What belt grinder did you buy? I've also been looking for a mode...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

Thanks for the pictures! @N2 - Hhmm if i cannot find the actual dimensions, then using Sam's sword and relatively-scaled picture will be a decent Plan B. Greatly appreciate the last picture you shared :) . If you do go ahead and make your own versions, I eagerly await progress pictures! I'm fairly ...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

Thanks N2darkness for the photos, especially for the size comparison. I would love to see the ones that you have already made in steel, I will look to see if you have posted a photo on instagram. Sorry, if I misled you. I have not made them yet and just starting the early planning and gathering sup...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

Kit - sorry to change topics... but is there any (newer) interest at all from UC to complete the Barrow Blades? Reason I ask is I may have found someone willing to custom make the 3 for me... but, obviously I'd prefer official replicas to match my Sam's Sword. Or - any (newer) interest in making an...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

So I guess the new United catalog also came out today with pictures of Eomer's scabbard to be released this year. I somehow didn't think it was this far ahead unless it is just an artist rendering (probably) and also no mention of MC Anduril which is already up for pre-order. Theodred's sword is als...

Re: United Cutlery's - The Hobbit - Movie Props!

That reminds me of this video of Peter Lyon showing Adam Savage how to grind a Strider sword blade to fit a United Cutlery hilt. He explains a lot to Adam about making a proper, functional sword blade with a distal taper, vs a factory made blade. It's fun watching them look over my version of the h...

Re: United Cutlery's - The Hobbit - Movie Props!

I have probably posted pictures before, but I don't think I have ever posted any video anywhere. Honestly, it would be kind of boring. The casting factory making the hilt parts is kind of interesting, but once a blade is mounted in the hollow grinder, you can't really even see what is happening in ...

Re: United Cutlery's - The Hobbit - Movie Props!

Fullers are milled, but the blades are blanked out of sheet stock. Picture a large steel cookie cutter attached to a 200 ton hammer press, but instead of a flat sheet of cookie dough being blanked out, it's 5 or 6mm thick sheet of steel. Those blanks are run though a computer controlled grinder tha...

Re: United Cutlery's - The Hobbit - Movie Props!

That's just one of the color tests on a blank blade. It will be the LOTR version, like the concept art I posted in this thread back in May. I think I already mentioned this back then, but this version will use the same sword tooling as the standard Sting sword. United did not want to commit to the ...

Re: United Cutlery's - The Hobbit - Movie Props!

The Shard's are closer to being movie accurate, although the fuller on the Shard's prop I had did not exactly match the length on Narsil hero prop blade. UC's Narsil/Anduril groove was much shorter because they were not able to mill a groove that long with the equipment they had at the time. They c...

Re: United Cutlery's - The Hobbit - Movie Props!

I already have, many, many times. As I said several posts up, I don't think any more limited eds will be allowed with that license. Other than the second Sauron helm, I don't think UC even really wanted or planned on doing the other two. Speaking of LE's, quick question :) Have always wondered abou...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

Just looked at the new Bag End again. Really, it is a wonderfully made rendition of BE. But I'm not going back on my previous "pass". I have B-E already, and it will do just fine. Yes, it is really wonderful, which makes it all the more difficult of a decision. N2, not sure of yo...

Re: United Cutlery's - The Hobbit - Movie Props!

Well, there really has not been anything new or reissued in the past 3-4 years that has not flown out the door, so that's not really an issue! As I understand it, LOTR sales the past few years have almost equaled what they were back when the original trilogy came out. Manufacturing materials really...

Re: United Cutlery's - The Hobbit - Movie Props!

I don't think I have ever seen that photo before, but if they were for licensees than I probably wouldn't have. I also noticed another spear tip with a banner on it that I have never seen before either, which looks rather cool as well. Spear.jpg You had mentioned that UC would be more willing to mak...

Re: United Cutlery's - The Hobbit - Movie Props!

I'd love to the standard spear made someday as well. Me too, but I think United will want to do the more ornate Theoden version first, rather than that generic Rohan soldier version. Which one is that? The one that looks like Eomer's but closed loops on the end? Honestly I don't remember him having...

Re: United Cutlery's - The Hobbit - Movie Props!

I added a few more pix in the KRDS thread. Thanks for the additional photos! The metallic finish looks great. Hopefully the sales of these are good and we can get some more Rohan spears. I'd love to the standard spear made someday as well. Lord-of-The-Rings-The-Fellowship-of-the-Ring-Spear-tip-of-R...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

I'm holding off right now on tDoD as well. The size is decent and I actually have space for it, but $499 seems a bit much to me. I guess I was hoping it would have been $399. I too have Bilbo in Bagend, Sauron and the Argonath on order and we still have the newer Bagend to probably come next month a...
