Sauron statue update!

Sideshow sent out an email updating on the status of the statue. It's still coming, but because it's SO complex, they've taken down the estimated availability date. In the mean time, there are some prototype pix plus story to entice us: http://www.sideshowtoy.com/cgi-bin/category.cgi?category=111904...

Re: EE new scenes revealed!

Supposedly now there will be no preview for the nov 29th trailer, they will jsut be showing one thats already been seen Today TORn had a link to a site (Video Craving or something like that) that claimed to have the preview of the preview, but it was the same thing that's been available for several...

Re: PJ hates the Army of the Dead?

Aragorn might not have thought that he'd more or less immediately be marching on the Black Gate, but he knew the war was far from over, and that another battle would ensue before too much longer. On the other hand, Valkrist makes a good point that it would have been unwise to keep the dead army arou...

Re: EE new scenes revealed!

I'll be running out to my local Best Buy over lunch and picking up the Collector's Set. Like Valkrist, I will be logging onto Sideshow's site the second I get home to order Minas Morgul. Because I haven't given Sideshow enough of my money yet! :D

Re: PJ hates the Army of the Dead?

It's truly remarkable that he supposedly hates them, considering he greatly e xp anded their role for the movie! In the book, they kill the Corsairs of Umbar, allowing Aragorn and the Dunedain to take control of the ships. Then Aragorn releases them. The Dead never go to the Pelennor. In the movie.....

Re: Missing Sword of Sauron

Yes, Turgon may be right. If I remember, the supplements on TTT:EE showed some of the infamous Arwen at Helm's Deep footage. So if any of the Aragorn/Sauron fight got filmed, we may see it. Personally, I think having Arwen show up and fight at Helm's Deep would bother me a lot more than having Arago...

Re: Missing Sword of Sauron

This all reminds me of a 22+ year old conversation I had with my cousin after seeing "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" the first time. He was disappointed that Kirk never actually came face to face with Khan to fight him. I replied that they had done so in the TV episode that introduced th...

An odd LOTR/"Deep Impact" resonance

Tonight I watched "Deep Impact," which in case you haven't seen it, was a movie about a comet on collision course with Earth. Elijah Wood was in it. As a co-discoverer of the comet, the government had selected him to be one of the people to go underground to wait out the "nuclear wint...

Re: Missing Sword of Sauron

I'm pretty sure this got cut even sooner than that did.) I'm fairly sure the Aragorn/Sauron encounter at the Black Gate was teased by PJ sometime around the time of the theatrical debut of TTT. It would have been filmed during pickups for ROTK, if it were filmed. Ancalagon's "Changes" lis...

Re: EE new scenes revealed!

A preview for a preview. And I thought (much earlier on) that it seemed like New Line wasn't going to hype this thing! :rolleyes_

Which is not to say I won't be clogging the bandwith on the 25th trying to get this thing!

Re: Trilogy Extended Edition DVD Boxed Set

and as for a sleeve to slip all your EE's in, well i didnt get the FOTR boxed set, i only got the reguler EE (for the ROTK EE, im most defiently getting the boxed set, i just cant pass up the minas tirith scuplture, lol) so i dont have those argonath bookends, but i did a while back get the sidesho...

Re: Missing Sword of Sauron

I've never seen that one before; I don't think it was on the DVD either. I seem to recall that they shot a much longer version of the prologue. They then scrapped the prologue completely because they felt audiences would be overwhelmed by all the facts and names. New Line then insisted that they hav...

Re: Trilogy Extended Edition DVD Boxed Set

It would be nice if New Line was offering just the box by itself for those of us in this situation, but I've heard nothing to that effect. I haven't heard anything like that in reference to this specific box, but New Line did e xp licitly say that the sleeve used to box up the three theatrical cuts...

Re: EE new scenes revealed!

Yes, I saw the scene in the preview between Eowyn and Faramir. I would find it odd to have any sung music played over that scene, as it would interfere w/the dialog, let along sung by someone associated with a different character. But as you point out, we shall see! ;-)

Re: EE new scenes revealed!

Back before ROTK debuted in the theaters, I read that Liv Tyler had written and recorded a song called "Arwen's Song," presumably to be played over the end credits. Once the soundtrack CD was revealed, that song was found to be missing in action. I never heard why, or even if the original ...

Re: Where would you like to live?

What a good poll question! I was always partial to Rivendell and thought it would be idyllic to live in a place like that, but as a geologist I would always be worried about floods and avalanches. Minas Tirith would be very interesting, but I think it would be a little too creepy to have a view of t...

Re: EE new scenes revealed!

Well, this is interesting. I just tried the site again and it was just the same--PJ's smiling face, but when you click on the link, it doesn't work. I refreshed the browser, and after the page reloaded, the link to the PJ segment was no longer there! Instead, there was a link to a written interview ...

Re: EE new scenes revealed!

The official site, www.lordoftherings.net , has a new clip of PJ discussing the EE. For some reason, I wasn't able to access it, so I don't know its content, but it's my impression, based on a blurb on theonering.net, that it doesn't contain any movie footage. TORn would have posted a spoiler warnin...

Re: EE new scenes revealed!

Bless you Grima, for posting those. It looks like the rumor that was circulating several weeks ago is true: no extra Arwen/Elrond scenes (so we're left forever with the impression that she magically changed dresses from one shot to the next, I suppose an easy feat for someone who could chant a river...

Re: EE new scenes revealed!

I think it cheapens the story to have them kill the Mouth. As you point out, the Mouth did claim diplomatic immunity, and whatever they may have felt about him, our heroes play by the rules and would not summarily off him. Of course, I guess he provokes this--I read something about the Mouth SPOILER...

Re: EE new scenes revealed!

sorry i've been of the internet for a week and didnt really know whats been going on, dont i feel embarrest :o I really tried to word that post in such a way as not to embarrass you or make you feel bad, but obviously I didn't succeed, so the apologies are mine. Don't feel bad about it! ;) In a lig...

Re: EE new scenes revealed!

I never inferred the WK's scream in that scene to be activating the beacon. As I recall the scene, Mt Doom erupts, the ground shakes, there are a few noises from Minas Morgul that I can't describe (but definitely not a scream), a moment of silence, and then the beacon goes up. The lights in that pas...

Re: EE new scenes revealed!

Turgon wrote:Perhaps to the writers the only improvements that came with Gandalf becoming White, were his new clothes and his "samurai-like" approach to fighting.

That may be, but if so, they need to abandon any pretenses to being faithful to the book.

Re: EE new scenes revealed!

Still, I will not be surprised to see that reference from FOTR used by PJ, Fran and/or Phillipa in the Apendices or commentary of the ROTK-EE to e xp lain/justify their decision to break the White Staff. Well, I guess we'll all know what the HECK they were thinking in a few weeks. I think we all al...

Re: EE new scenes revealed!

Yet miraculously and without e xp lanation, he has a new white staff at the Havens. That's the one thing about this whole sordid affair that doesn't bother me. Remember, several years pass between the end of the War and the Havens. Gandalf has plenty of time to get a new staff from Lothlorien. Anyh...

Re: EE new scenes revealed!

I should leave that for Val to answer, and I'm sure he will, but I think he felt it wasn't relevant because the loss of that Grey staff was part and parcel of his transformation into something greater. In the context of ROTK, Gandalf is not going to become more than he already is as the White, and t...

Re: EE new scenes revealed!

DVD Town has posted a slew of screen caps from the EE: http://www.dvdtown.com/screenshots/lordoftheringsreturnoftheking-/12523/ Some of them are of scenes that were in the TE, and most of the new EE scenes, we've already seen before. There's at least one noteworthy new one, however, and that's of PJ...

Re: EE new scenes revealed!

In some ways, Bakshi did stick closer to the book than PJ. The Bree sequence is a good example. Frodo sings and falls, Aragorn has the broken sword, Merry goes for a walk and encounters the Nazgul. At the Ford of Bruinen, Frodo rides alone (although it's Legolas, not Glorfindel--or Arwen--who arrive...

Re: EE new scenes revealed!

It always seemed to me that the staff was the symbol of the wizard's power, authority, and even his life. When Gandalf's staff breaks in Moria, it's a symbol of his death, which happens immediately thereafter (though "off-camera"). When Gandalf breaks Saruman's staff, it's a symbol of the ...

Re: EE new scenes revealed!

Olorin: speaking of staff replacements, the books of course do not say whether the grey staff was lost at Orthanc, or if Gandalf even took it with him, though the natural assumption would be that he did, as you pointed out. Did you notice however, that in Bakshi's version, when Gandalf is shown imp...

Re: EE new scenes revealed!

As for the WK/GW fight, I had never heard that alternate scenes had been shot, but if so, it is of some small comfort to me that if the WK must break G's staff, he will do it with his scream, and not some cheesy fireball or yet another invented fight that never happened. So the WK is...Ella Fitzger...

Re: EE new scenes revealed!

Yes, that is Gothmog w/Gimli. SUpposedly Gimli kills him in the EE. I figured Eowyn would do the honors, since one of the clips shows her slugging him, but I guess PJ figured she had enough glory offing the WK. Regarding the staffs, in the book it is never said that Gandalf loses his staff while at ...

Re: EE new scenes revealed!

....Yet, in the exact same time frame (albeit different movie,) Sauron now believes that the Ring is now with Pippin in far off Edoras. I'm sorry, but even Sauron could not be so stupid to think that the Ring could make that journey at the speed of light from one location to another. The two sequen...

Re: EE new scenes revealed!

Gandalf is not a warrior per se, and his power is not in his sword or his staff. His wisdom is very important, but it's not his sole power, or the source of it. As one of the Ainur, Gandalf has tremendous supernatural power, planet-shaping power, power that can raise mountains or carve out ocean bas...

Re: EE new scenes revealed!

Hes left on the top (or wherever he is) on orthanc. I really dont see why they had to kill him off. If there portraying gandalf as a weak old man against the witchking, why cant they let grima live. Anyways, he does the fellowship a favor by killing sarumon, I dont see why that crazy legolas had to...

Re: EE new scenes revealed!

I wish I'd been there when PJ, Phillippa, and Fran were sitting around saying "Wouldn't it be cool if the WK kicked Gandalf's ass?" I'd have been the one saying "Whoa!" That German site that's supposedly the source of these pix also had one of Gandalf doing some sort of Etch-a-Sk...

Re: EE new scenes revealed!

Correct me if Im wrong, but Grima doesnt actually throw the palantir at gandalf to hurt him. Legolas asks gandalf if he should shoot grima, but gandalf says 'no, he meant no harm'. Anyways, i thought always grima would throw done the palantir, but I recently heard that Sarumon will fall on the spik...

Re: EE new scenes revealed!

My interpretation is that Grima stabs Saruman and Mr. Lightning-quick-reflexes Legolas immediately plants an arrow in him. Both drop dead, Saruman over the side. I suspect he will drop the palantir, vs. it being thrown by Grima like in the book.

Re: EE new scenes revealed!

Wow, so many things to reply to. First, Thorongil, thanks for posting the cool pix! I hadn't seen those yet. Grima, in case nobody's told you by now, in the movie Grima gets shot w/an arrow by Legolas after killing Saruman. In the book, he's arrowed by a Hobbit in the Shire after killing Saruman the...

Re: EE new scenes revealed!

SPOILERS! Here is a report from theonering.net from someone who has supposedly seen the EE. Two things of particular interest: Saruman turns to dust after his impalement (Dracula over and over again, and so much for the hope that he [and Sauron] would turn to vapors after their respective demises!),...
