Re: Pure Star Trek Discussion

A bit belated, but RIP to Louise Fletcher, who so notably portrayed Kai Winn in DS9. She died Friday and was 88 years old. Fletcher is most famous for playing Nurse Ratched in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" but of course to us she'll forever be known as Winn. She was a character that w...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

@N2 ...Yes , yes it does help. Thank you very much. That the statue "was fairly tight and left some some paint smudges on the tissue paper" does not speak very well for current Weta quality. Not the "fairly tight" part...it's that it didn't take very much friction for the paint t...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

It look majestic!! N2D, Is the blue of the water as blue as the promo pics? And can you discern anyone on the tiny boats? Also, are you considering colour-touching up the trees? The blue is pretty good, light and darker in the areas it should be. There is enough detail in the boats to make out each...

Re: Pure Star Trek Discussion

Oh no doubt! I specifically mentioned Catspaw because, if memory serves, it actually aired on Halloween during season 2? Can't be sure as I was recently arrived in the world as of 1968, but I thought I read somewhere they specifically wrote it as a Halloween episode.... Close.... 31 OCT 1967 was a ...

Re: The Rings Of Power

I personally know that I am not a great reader, more time goes than I would like between books, and I have not read too many different authors. But for me, if is difficult to read a book because its writing is not simple and easy to digest as in modern works, it really challenges me and I try harde...

Re: Pure Star Trek Discussion

...not a fan of Fright Night though.... That included The Innocents (probably my favorite haunted house movie of all time), The Uninvited, The Others, Legend of Hell House, Crimson Peak, The Orphanage, Devil's Backbone, Night House, Woman in Black, The Changeling, and The Shining, among others. I t...

Re: The Rings Of Power

You know the Aesop fable of The Fox and The Grapes? Short version: A fox spots a cluster of grapes, nearly bursting from ripeness, hanging from an arbor. He thinks they would be pretty tasty, so he leaps up to snatch the grapes, but just misses by a few inches. He leaps again, and again he just miss...

Re: Pure Star Trek Discussion

... ST: TMP was the last movie I watched before going into Halloween mode. This year I am going through My David Croneneberg "horror" film collection, in the order they were made. Shivers, Rabid, The Brood, Scanners, and Videodrome, so far. I still have The Dead Zone, The Fly, Dead Ringer...

....I can't wait for the writers to change her because of the criticism she is receiving from many specialized media (I don't know if she had already commented here before on what the actress told the Hollywood Reporter): https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-features/rings-of-power-morfydd-clark...

Re: The Rings Of Power

1)I said under 30 and under because I was giving those over 30 the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps I was mistaken ... 2) I am talking about the written word, not the transposition of the text to the movie. 3) And I seriously doubt that Tolkien wrote all that he did and as he did "to boost the wor...

Re: Pure Star Trek Discussion

Oh, oh, oh... I know, I know!!! He's doing all the classics: Scream and its endless sequels; Saw and its endless sequels; Paranormal Activity and its endless sequels... did I miss anything? AmIrite, AmIrite, AmIrite? You're kidding, right? Yes, of course you are. No way Olorin watches that ...

Re: The Rings Of Power

I read the Article that was linked. At the end, the writer explained what it takes to write a good story and to write it well. It.Will.Never. Happen. And let me tell you why... I am a [new] member of TheTolkien Forum . The forum has been around for a while (2004?) and was started with the idea of di...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

So, Val, have you ordered yours yet? You're joking, right? You must be. Yes, that's it. Of course you are... Well, no, I wasn't.... There isn't a preset limit of the number that will be made, so there's no reason (imo) to jump on this immediately. I haven' t...so I was just, you know , kind o...

Re: The Rings Of Power

I know its sacrilege to say, but JRRT wasn't the greatest writer known to man Uh oh... you better run BC, I can hear Deimos and Val’s blood boiling  :D Well, I would agree he's not "the greatest writer known to man" if one is lumping together all genres... literature, biography, au...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

Taking in all the details of the statue... we know the armour and gear is pretty accurate, not just with respect to the movie but also in real life. PJ took not a few pains to ensure he had knowledgeable consultants. So just the weight of all that maille (knee length!) and armour that a medieaval wa...

Re: The Rings Of Power

Actually, like XerachCruz it's the deviation from canon that was the greatest disappointment, to the extent that I was gritting my teeth because of it. The shoehorned diversity was just an added irritant. Had they stuck to canon more (much more!) my other complaints might have sunk to insignificance...

Re: The Rings Of Power

... Someone mentioned something similar earlier in this thread, that a lot of the movies we watch are not “culturally correct”. We’re watching movies about French people being played by Brits and Americans in KOH and also in The Last Duel, we’re watching a story set in ancient Egypt that should be ...

Re: The Rings Of Power

It's too bad that it is such a letdown** The Cinemark theatres in the Phoenix metro area are doing single night one show screenings for each episode. Had I liked what I had seen in the trailers (and what I read in the pre-screening reviews) I would have watched the series on a big screen. I was read...

Re: The Rings Of Power

...Mind you, this is 99.9% made up, nothing Tolkien, completely non-canon. Although the non-canon half of the story could have happened because it doesn't contradict it, the other half directly contradicts the canon entirely. ... I have read the books, and I can tell you that this is not like the a...

Re: The Rings Of Power

Go to Rotten Tomatoes Rings of Power . Note the huge difference in what the critics say about it, and what the audience says about it. This is not the first time that there has been a significant difference in what the critics rate a movie and what the audience rates it. Was going to send you to the...

Re: The Rings Of Power

The train has wrecked ...big time. I didn't actually see the wreck ( I have a weak stomach) but from what I've been reading it's total, complete. And I guess the GoT series wasn't great but left RoP in the dust anyway. ROFL.... can't wait to see what the Big Honchos at Amazon are going to say (and ...
