Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

Thanks for posting that. I voted for the Wheatertop swords as I think Merry and Pippin have gotten the shaft for 20 years. I really want the Lorien knife too, but with the swords, we'd get one individualized weapon for each Hobbit, whereas the knife is a single item (though you could always buy two...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

I guess True Swords an affiliate of BudK is running a customer poll just like UC did on FB a few weeks ago. You can only pic one this time. I already voted and hope the link still works for those here not on FB. 2023-09-15 09.05.25-1.jpg https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScwLh15MDts5aDBf8btDd...

Re: Flame of Udun Forum news

I've been a member since it started and now only a "lurker" as I refuse to contribute there anymore. The attitudes and opinions have definitely changed over the last few years, but it was good to see the MODS actually addressed them in the update. I don't expect much to change though. I've...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

N2, which version of the staff do you have and are you planning to upgrade yours? I have the newer resin head staff. I cleaned up and repainted mine a number of years ago as it was also starting to crack where the crown meets the wooden pole. Not sure if I'm going to upgrade or not as all I'd need ...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

The subtle grey wash woodgraining effect looks great! I would figure it would have to be done assembled with it's corresponding lower half of the pole assembled, otherwise the paint lines wouldn't match up and making the seam even more noticeable. There is barely any wood grain effect on the shaft ...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

I was curious as about the items you didn't have physical props from as there are many on the list. Are these some you have more references from and that was why they are on the list? or just collector input? Drew only had the six items at the top in the original poll. It was just supposed for the ...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

UC did another poll on that LOTR Collectors Facebook group for the next steel blade replica yesterday. Same six items I mentioned on this page, but users added all kinds of stuff to the poll that are not swords or knives, so the numbers are all skewed. It turned into another anything and everything...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

Also, what kind of numbers (in sales or units sold) is considered successful for more items to be made? Like Eomer's sword to get the scabbard made, or the scabbard sales to get Theoden's approved, etc. 'Successful' really depends on a lot of factors. It's not just the units sold, but how fast they...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

It is, but that was just the current bladed replicas list :) No development hurdles at all with that bow, other than the cost due to the quiver and arrows I want to include. It's just that UC has not given it the green light yet. There is a lot going on in their polyresin prop replica development a...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

Andrew, could you give me the plaque dimensions as if you fitting it into a square shape? I'm currently putting my swords on my walls and space is very limited but I do want to plan for this sword and make sure I have space for it prepared ahead of time. Oh, and the sword length also, please. Thank...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

Received my Faramir's sword today. What a great piece and very happy to have it in my collection. Only a couple of nit pics, the fuller grind is a bit uneven as well as the false edge (you can feel it when you run your hands down the edge) but nothing I'd exchange for. Can't wait to get it hung up o...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

It always amazes me when we present a new product idea to a certain licensor and they have no idea what the thing is. I have to explain it to them, cite references from their own film, show them their own prop photos, et cetera. Then when it comes to marketing copy for the packaging, COAs, et ceter...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

I was looking for other potential designs Weta had drawn for Orcrist and found this article. https://www.trueswords.com/united-cutlery-brings-tolkien-weapons-to-life It is from 2015, but have never read it before. I've often seen numerous times where companies mention "licensor approval" b...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

I watched it this morning over breakfast. I'm always impressed with Weta's weathered finish on aluminum stunt blades. But Orcrist's design still hasn't grown on me even after all these years. I know it still carries over some designs from Glamdring and Sting, but way too different IMHO. I have it to...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

Ummm...what? Sorry, but I think Dan's memory is quite a bit off on that one. This was 20+ years ago, so it's understandable. I can quite confidently state that I did not invent anything for the back of the Elven shields. What United made is almost spot on to what the Weta prop looked like. I owned ...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

I ordered it, but I have to admit, I almost passed on it when I saw the price and that unnaturally flowing cape in the back. I hate it when Weta does that weirdly blowing cloth stuff. It's what turned me off off of getting their elven warrior statue. At least this one only looks goofy in the back. ...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

I agree 100% with this on all points. The prices are absolutely crazy for 1/6 statues. I thought the previous Elendil was a stretch and this exceeds that by a fair margin. :jaw: This will also probably be my last piece from Weta, both for space and can't continue down this absurd road. I'll stick th...

Re: The War of the Rohirrim

So disheartening that all the great IP's are being diminished into horrible cash grabs nowadays. There is maybe a handful of films or TV shows from the last 10-15 years that are even vaguely memorable. It's so sad that I'd much rather watch something old or something I know is good than take a chanc...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

Just noticed that UC1381LTNB the scabbard to Legolas's daggers just showed up on Budk, so they should be rereleased fairly soon for any that were looking to pick them up. I'm not sure how that is possible, unless BudK has some old stock? UC is not making a new run. In fact, they just recently learn...

I'm curious if there are any changes to the release (not sure if Kit had mentioned anything, but maybe the leather stamp being re...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

IMG_4685.jpg So far so good - just the pretzel and the double-horsehead part of the buckle to go! Kit - I don't suppose you have a photo of the buckle itself by any chance? I've scoured the internet and the DVD's, I've found some photos that are taken at an angle but I'd love to see if there's a ph...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

I guess Drew posted this image of the re-release Stiders knife, but it looks like the inscription is flipped. Is this correct?
striders knife 2.jpg
versus Weta's prop
striders knife.jpg
Edit: Never mind must be that way depending on which way you read it, just like Hadafang Aeglos, etc.

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

I think the little improvements are great and looking forward to picking one of these up. And seeing the helmet makes me want one even more! Trying to figure out what is in the bottom right hand side as I don't immediately recognize it. Also curious to the rest of the years release schedule? I think...

Re: New Weta everywhere you look!

Got my Elendil yesterday and he's one of the best 1/6 I've ever seen. Insanely detailed. Really can't wait for Gil-Galad now! https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52711460590_99b61e280d_b.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52711304824_b7e8fd2bb2_b.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/52711046...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

It came with a steel wall hook. I can't remember what I spec'd to hang the shield to the hook with, but it probably was a chain. The wall hook was green and kind of shaped like the shield with some designs on it. It came with a braided leather strap with a loop on each side to be wrapped around the...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

Uhg, that one brings back frustrating memories. I think I may have mentioned that issue before, but this project dragged on for so long, I'm not sure. I have photos of a couple of different scabbards and they both have a texture, as did my urethane Weta scabbard. I think all the props in the photos...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

When we started making LOTR scabbards way back around 2001, Kydex was not used in production, and definitely not in Taiwan or China. We were actually mimicking the look of Kydex with injection molded sheaths in the 1990s. It was just becoming a hot trend in the custom knifemaker market at the time....

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

Have any of you received your Eomer scabbards? I received two from production yesterday and both are too tight to fit the sword. They were 100% inspected at the factory, so I assume it's a wood shrinkage issue on this side. Or probably just my back luck returning. I got mine yesterday and it does f...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

I ordered one of the new helm stands with my Eomer scabbard to potentially use it on the Theoden crown as a base. But also surprised that they aren't more popular. I also agree with Val, that some sort of a universal scabbard holder would be nice to have. They are after all one of the most difficult...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

Upon searching Budk's site (I check daily for new stuff) I saw 3 new listings Gandalf's white staff Uruk-hai scimitar Sauron 1:1 helm - limited to 50 pcs with One Ring Checked with UC. The Uruk reissue will be coming early this year, but the others are wrong. Probably something flagged wrong on Bud...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

Where did you see the new listings? I generally check daily as well for the same reason, but I didn't see anything in the LOTR section or Pre-Sale/Coming soon. I have access to the wholesale website for Budk and they are on there, but unable to order. Just the listing. I did check the regular site ...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

Just like others said, I can't believe that is something that they let people try on and wear. Not that I wouldn't want to hold a Peter Lyon original if given a chance (with gloves of course). Upon searching Budk's site (I check daily for new stuff) I saw 3 new listings Gandalf's white staff Uruk-ha...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

The MC version is pretty close, but those pits in the guard meant to simulate the weathering on the props were too large. The vine was always a bit to shiny for me as well. The improved standard UC version will have the same finish on the parts as the standard version does now, but the guard will m...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

Much later Weta sent me the small-scale actor double prop, but we were already on the market by then. Then the film comes out and we mostly see the Elijah scale prop on screen, which is proportionately different from what we made. That's what sparked the idea for the more screen accurate MC Sting a...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

With the direction of the economy, it may get put on hold for a while in favor of less expensive products to develop, like polyresin replicas and war banners. Does that also mean more expensive pieces to produce like Faramir's sword or Gimli's throwing axes are also on hold? Completely understandab...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

True! But maybe UC might make one, who knows? And then everyone who wants one can get one. I can only realistically make half a dozen or so, and that's with the molding and casting doing most of the work. I couldn't even imagine trying to hand beat each one out of plate brass and silver! UC does no...

Re: United Cutlery's - LOTR & The Hobbit - Movie Props!

Don't want to presume that you'd make more than just the one for yourself, but if you do, I would be interested as well. If you pursue this project, place me first in line to purchase one! If I do into make this, molds would have to be made and a small run would be produced. I'll start a separate t...
