The other day when I saw you had posted in this thread, D, I knew it was to gig me about falling asleep!
While we remember Tolkien's 128th birthday today, I'll take a slight detour to mention the 100th birthday, yesterday, of the late great Isaac Asimov. He was one of the giants in sci fi and his Foundation series is considered one of the few real rivals to Tolkien's work, in terms of an epic series. Asimov died in 1992, but before that time, he published about 500 books.

Re: Toast Tolkien on his birthday, January 3
82You know, the great majority of Asimov's books were non-fiction.
He was also a big Sherlock Holmes fan, and I'm pretty sure he was a longtime member of the Baker Street Irregulars.
I have his "Asimov's Sherlockian Limericks" (I have been an avid [re]reader of the SH stories for about 35 years.)
I recently re-read the Foundation Trilogy (and only the trilogy....not the Foundation related books subsequent to it, even tho' Foundation's Edge has been sitting on the shelf next to FT since it [FE] was published.)
It has been so long since the first time--30 years I'm guessing---it was almost like reading it for the first time.
I do remember having liked it the first time around. And the second time? ....I still like it, and I think I much better appreciate Asimov's "storytelling" talent.
So, Olorin, have you read any of the other Foundation related books? If so, what did you think of them? Any (or all) worth reading?
(@ the Mods; feel free to move this discussion as it is hardly Tolkein related)

Re: Toast Tolkien on his birthday, January 3
83I anticipated your question a little over 2 years ago and answered it here: viewtopic.php?p=111864#p111864
In general, I thought the two sequels and the two prequels were superior to the original trilogy, as they were written in a much more readable, less dated style, and tied all of Asimov's Robot, Galactic Empire, and Foundation novels into one universe.
The latest platform to announce a filmed Foundation is Apple TV+; we'll see if it happens or not.

I do remember the discussion now (without even going back to the post), so it must have been two years ago when I re-read it.
(That's still [relatively] "recently" considering the way time is passing for me. :-p )
And it was more like 40+ years ago that i first read it :-p :-p :-p

85LOL, when you asked about Asimov yesterday, I had to stop and think about whether we'd ever talked about it on the forum. A little searching, and there it was, already saying everything I had been formulating to say in response to your question. But the very short answer is that I find Foundation's Edge, Foundation and Earth, Prelude to Foundation, and Forward the Foundation to be very worthy reads.
