And a happy belated birthday from me as well. I forgot last night. I guess it's gotten to the stage where unless I set a reminder on my phone, I won't remember it.

I always remember it in advance to remind everyone else, and I even remembered it earlier in the day on the 3rd. But come 9:00 and I forgot. I think I was reading and had drowsed off for a bit.

I did. I forgot to make the toast. You're supposedly to actually say "The Professor" at 9 pm local time and raise a glass (and not just post about it).

Getting older is a pain.

Yes, it's that time again. On Sunday Jan 3 at 9 pm local time, raise your glass and intone, "the Professor" in honor of the man who has given us so much enjoyment.

I am sorry you missed it, truly I am. I look forward to this annual [posthumous] acknowledgement of him and his works.
I even smoked my churchwarden (tobacco: Runis of Isengard) --which I do once a quarter -- in his honor.

LOL, smarty-pants! I’ll probably doze off or otherwise get distracted. I was awake for the arrival of 2018 but was watching a show and didn’t notice the new year for four minutes.

My problem will be simply forgetting to do it, as I'm staying about till midnight or after every night, binge-watching all the blurays I've acquired recently.

Well, don't you have an alarm clock? I'm not ashamed to say that I do that.....set your alarm clock (or your host's if you are out).
The Tolkien Society will be ever so proud of you if you manage to remember this year.
(and, btw, a raspberry emoji would be great...GW?...maybe when things get back to normal later in the month?...)

Random thoughts here....

The other day when I saw you had posted in this thread, D, I knew it was to gig me about falling asleep!

While we remember Tolkien's 128th birthday today, I'll take a slight detour to mention the 100th birthday, yesterday, of the late great Isaac Asimov. He was one of the giants in sci fi and his Foundation series is considered one of the few real rivals to Tolkien's work, in terms of an epic series. Asimov died in 1992, but before that time, he published about 500 books.

You know, the great majority of Asimov's books were non-fiction.
He was also a big Sherlock Holmes fan, and I'm pretty sure he was a longtime member of the Baker Street Irregulars.
I have his "Asimov's Sherlockian Limericks" (I have been an avid [re]reader of the SH stories for about 35 years.)

I recently re-read the Foundation Trilogy (and only the trilogy....not the Foundation related books subsequent to it, even tho' Foundation's Edge has been sitting on the shelf next to FT since it [FE] was published.)
It has been so long since the first time--30 years I'm guessing---it was almost like reading it for the first time.
I do remember having liked it the first time around. And the second time? ....I still like it, and I think I much better appreciate Asimov's "storytelling" talent.
So, Olorin, have you read any of the other Foundation related books? If so, what did you think of them? Any (or all) worth reading?

(@ the Mods; feel free to move this discussion as it is hardly Tolkein related)

I anticipated your question a little over 2 years ago and answered it here: viewtopic.php?p=111864#p111864

In general, I thought the two sequels and the two prequels were superior to the original trilogy, as they were written in a much more readable, less dated style, and tied all of Asimov's Robot, Galactic Empire, and Foundation novels into one universe.

The latest platform to announce a filmed Foundation is Apple TV+; we'll see if it happens or not.

Ummmm.....yeah..... :embarasse
I do remember the discussion now (without even going back to the post), so it must have been two years ago when I re-read it.
(That's still [relatively] "recently" considering the way time is passing for me. :-p )

And it was more like 40+ years ago that i first read it :-p :-p :-p

LOL, when you asked about Asimov yesterday, I had to stop and think about whether we'd ever talked about it on the forum. A little searching, and there it was, already saying everything I had been formulating to say in response to your question. But the very short answer is that I find Foundation's Edge, Foundation and Earth, Prelude to Foundation, and Forward the Foundation to be very worthy reads.

Yoohoo!.... oh, yoooo... hoooo....Olorin, dear, are you there?
You know what tomorrow is, right?
Tell Siri, tell your cat(s), tell your neighbors, set a loud alarm...whatever it takes to keep you awake and/or undistracted at 9PM CST.
I myself have tea, hot cocoa, beer, wine or water to choose from...and of course, my Churchwarden [Gandalf-type] pipe is at the ready also.
