Hey everyone,
Last year I bought a pretty nice costume for Halloween and/or Ren Fests. The issue I am having is since I bought the costume, I have lost quite a bit of weight/inches, etc. So I am curious to know what type of tailor I could bring the costume to do be altered.
I own this
http://www.museumreplicas.com/p-646-duk ... pants.aspx
and this
http://www.museumreplicas.com/p-1234-du ... ublet.aspx
and this http://www.museumreplicas.com/p-1236-co ... shirt.aspx
which all could use some alterations, the slashed pants especially will literally fall off of me.
I also have these boots
http://www.museumreplicas.com/p-388-ren ... boots.aspx for the costume as well.
I am looking to add
http://www.museumreplicas.com/p-1235-du ... -cape.aspx
and
http://www.museumreplicas.com/p-179-tud ... ffice.aspx
The chain is sold out pretty much everywhere tho, most of the Tudors stuff has long been discontinued.
Everyone keeps asking if I am going to add a sword to the costume, but the only swords I own with scabbards are my LOTR swords, Glamdring, Anduril and the Ranger Sword, and none of those will do, because they are completely identifiable with LOTR, not Tudor era England. Anyone have any suggestions?
Also, anyone know about this time period and what would be a good way to keep personal belongings, such as keys and wallet handy. The pants or doublet have no pockets to put anything in so anything would help. I usually wear regular shorts or something underneath them, but that becomes a hassle to try and get stuff out of.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions and/or input.

BC, that is a very cool costume you are putting together.
I can't answer you question about the sword, but I can answer the problem about how to carry small stuff, money keys etc.
Answer: you are a member of the aristocracy, if not royalty itself! You don't bother about carrying anything. You don't need money (you own the treasury after all) and you have servants that carry all that other stuff for you.
So hire a few out-of-work peasants or serfs to carry your keys and nail clipper.

Real answer: I didn't notice if your costume has a belt of any kind, even underneath something, but a small leather pouch, I think is what was used...or maybe one of silk or velvet or ermine by the wealthy.

Re: Costume Help/Suggestions
4Any good tailor can make your alterations for you. If they are truly good, all they will require is for you to put on each piece so they can determine the fit. Where they decide to sew/stitch etc, will be of sound judgement based on the way the garment has been originally made.
If your new size is extremely different, don't be surprised if the tailor tells you your alterations will require a semi-remake (especially for the pant). The shirt probably needs nothing as they are intended to be pillowy/baggy, (maybe the neck needs to be brought in a bit.
BTW, congrats on all this weight loss. You must feel really good about needing these alterations
I would think that any rapier would also qualify with such a costume.

Re: Costume Help/Suggestions
5The shirt really isn't an issue, especially once its tucked in and the doublet is on. The doublet is okay, it could be taken in a bit to be narrower but the pants are the biggest issue, the waist is a few inches too big and the legs are really poofy.
Even if the tailor couldnt get it exactly down to my size, anything smaller will help.
I remember when I ordered it I wanted the L/XL pants, but were out so they sent me the S/M pants and I was really made about it, but even then they were big, now they are REALLY big. I don't know who measured these pants?!? I would need an XXS/XS according to them.
As far as the chain of office, I found this http://www.museumreplicas.com/p-128-knightly-chain.aspx ... which is an appropriate "Chain of Esses" livery chain, but it is lacking the Tudor Rose emblem.
As far as the sword is concerned, yes I think it would tie the costume together, but when the money I spent on the costume last year, added to any tailoring costs plus the fur cloak and chain, and sword may put the costume over budget for this year. I dont want to spend a couple hundred on a sword, when stuff for my main collection is right around the corner with the release of the Hobbit. Just depends on what I can find, I'll keep my eyes open.
The problem I really have is that I am from a smaller town so the only "tailors" we have are at the local dry cleaners... its hard to find a dedicated tailor.

Re: Costume Help/Suggestions
6I have been watching this listing on eBay because it looks like a good deal for the set, but I don't have a costume that would match the blades. Yours, however, would look sweet with them: http://www.ebay.com/itm/160848981558?ss ... 1423.l2649
Re: Costume Help/Suggestions
7Thats a nice set of swords. I am gonna hold off on the sword for the moment and concentrate on the alterations and the fur cloak.
My sis-in-law knows a couple people that may be able to help me out on the alterations.

10Well BC, I'm afraid I don't have any alterations tips for you, but as for wallet, etc. You can get this thing, and I'm afraid I don't know what it's called, that is a small flat pouch with a completely flat clip that you tuck inside your waist. I got one to keep my keys in when I used to go to the track, but it would certain be big enough to hold a small wad of bills, a credit card, an ID, etc.
Anyway, once you have your costume altered, I completely e xp ect and require you to post pictures!

11Here is me in the costume last Halloween, I am quite a bit smaller now, so I will post pics of it when it gets altered.
Re: Costume Help/Suggestions
12Absolutely dashing, BC! Seriously though, that's a pretty sweet costume. If you're not wanting to drain your coffers for a blade to go with it, how about a dagger? MR does a Venetian Stilleto that would look sweet with your costume: http://www.museumreplicas.com/p-309-ven ... letto.aspx

13I have a few daggers that would work. I will keep my eyes open for a deal on a sword.

Jeez, BC, if you are a lot smaller now, if you turn sideways people won't be able to see you! Black may be slimming, but you look very trim in that costume.

16Thanks Olorin.
Last October, I was wearing a 36 waist pants and XL shirts... now I wear a 32 waist and Medium shirts. I am also about 10 lbs smaller, but I did Insanity and p90x twice through and now I have joined a gym, so I added a lot of muscle weight.

18In your metric measurements I would be 180.34 cm tall, 79.83 kgs... which in American terms is 5 ft 11 inches and around 176 lbs.
But yes, I am looking at belts and hats now. I am looking around for a nicely priced rapier as well.

20Well, my sister in law found a local woman that can do alterations and we went over to her house the other day to look at it and said she could do it. I put on the costume and she pinned it up and made some notes. Going to go back in a couple of weeks and she will start the alterations after repinning it and I will be good to go for the Ren Fest.

I know exactly what the character is about. The costume is based on Charles Brandon, 1st Duke of Suffolk. A real life person in Tudor-era England, but in regards to the actual costume and character, he was portrayed by Henry Cavill, in The Tudors.

25I ordered and received the Fur Trimmed Cape and the Collar of Esses
http://www.museumreplicas.com/p-1235-du ... -cape.aspx
and
http://www.museumreplicas.com/p-128-knightly-chain.aspx
I am thinking of getting this hat, to go with the costume
http://www.tudorshoppe.com/Merchant2/me ... ry_Code=HT
I am still also wanting to get a belt and some sort of pouch to hold modern day goods (wallet, camera, keys, etc).
I would also like to add some sort of proper period accurate sword and maybe a side dagger as well, but that would come last and/or if I find one I like for a good price.

27I ordered the tutor hat the other day, waiting on its arrival.
I dont know if am going to do period sword/dagger this year or not, time is kind of running out and I dont want to rush into just buying something.
The only thing I want before the Ren Fest is to get a belt/pouch to carry all of my modern accessories. I still need keys and a wallet

I check MR every single day and when I saw that last weekend, I knew you would jump on it. This weekend, it is the long knife. I don't know whether or not to get it. It would be the perfect companion to my Oakeshotte XIV beater but I am saving for a firearm at the end of this month... so many choices
