HBO has just given the green light for this project! Filming is set to start in the summer and the series should arrive for next spring! Great news for Ice and Fire fans!

Also, check out the casting... you might see some familiar faces. http://www.thrfeed.com/2009/10/game-of- ... otos-.html

Well, better late than never, as they say; I'd completely forgotten about this! Definitely some familiar faces there. Will be nice to see Sean Bean as the 'good' guy for a change.

I also like Lena Headey as Cersei! Too bad any action you see with her will be with her on screen brother :|

Though if that means Mark Addy keeps his clothes on, maybe it's not such a bad thing :P

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire! - HBO

4
Haha. We will see how far HBO and the writers want to take it. I have my fingers crossed that they don't follow the whole incest thing to a T. GRRM spent waaaayyyy too much time talking about it, especially in the 3rd and 4th novels.

Either way, I am looking forward to seeing the stories come to life.
Valar morghulis

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire! - HBO

5
I'll be most interested to see how they play it as well. I mean, if they want to keep it true to the novels, the incest is going to have to be there. The Kingslayer is the real father of Cersei's children, after all. I suppose they could alter the lore slightly though, and have Jaime be Cersei's brother-in-law, or a second cousin or something, to make it seem not quite so bad. I don't know, I'm not familiar with HBO shows really, or how far they go with these kinds of themes.

I agree that he spent way too much time on the subject though. He comes across as a bit of an old perv sometimes actually, if you ask me. Especially with the Daenerys story-arc. I dunno, no matter what kind of pseudo-realism you're trying to establish, the 13/14 year old bride angle is tasteless, particularly in a narrative that doesn't hold back the details.
Obviously her age will be changed for the purposes of this series, so it's not a problem in that respect, but it does make you wonder what else they'll change.

I guess only time will tell, but I am also looking forward to seeing what they do with it.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire! - HBO

6
Well, there is a lot of other tasteless stuff in the books too. I for one hope they do not stray from the story at all. Those books are full of the most dispicable, flawed, and non-redeeming characters of about any work of fantasy fiction I have ever read. They should keep it that way.

I like the casting. Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister is perfect.

HBO did a great job with Rome in that way. Every character was flawed, but they handled it well, showing the journey and changes each character made through the arc of the show. They even handled the incest part of that story well.

I wonder if the swords will just be some generic Museum Replicas stuff, or if some thought will go into the designs making them historical looking, but unique to GRR's universe? The licensed swords being made by Valyrian Steel now are OK, but I would like to see something different. I take it back - I love the Longclaw from Valyrian Steel, but I hate the way that cheap wolf head pommel looks.

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire! - HBO

7
Agreed Domenicnas, I do hope they keep it the way it is in the books. I just hope they don't dwell on the tasteless stuff.

I haven't seen Rome and I have been meaning to along with Deadwood. I did see Carnivale and that was, well, different. The story was a little too bizarre for my tastes, but it was well done and I got into it fairly quickly. The great thing about HBO is that they don't have to adhere to the same standards as regular stations do because it is subscription based.
Valar morghulis

Re: A Song of Ice and Fire! - HBO

I tried to get into Deadwood, but failed. Didn't see Carnivale. I watched the first two episodes of Rome, and thought, eh. Then later I saw another one towards the end of season one that blew me away. Then I went back and watched the whole thing. Should have stuck with it from the first.

Just like any show, it takes 2-3 episodes for them to get their footing. But when they did-sweet!

w00t Sean Bean =D

No idea what this series is gonna be, but it's bound to be awesome with Boromir himself in there =P

Oh and blade, don't get your hopes up when it comes to spartacus. saw the first 4 episodes, or was it 5? No matter, battle sequences is a pure 300 rip-off, which is horrible in itself, and then there's just the general feel of the whole thing. Well, at least they got most of the costumes right.

I'm honestly quite surprised that no one's made a thread for this amazing series yet.

So what does everyone else think about the series? I sure love it, lol. Oh and if you haven't watched it yet, you sure should.

It must be entertaining then.

Fin, they couldn't have read the whole series because the end hasn't been written yet. Book five is still unpublished and I believe there is more after that. Maybe they meant they've read everything published so far?

Sed, they're only jabs if you let them be jabs. Anyhow, sex and violence are the least of my reasons for enjoying the show. I like it for the political intrigue, alliances, and betrayals. Sure much of is not original, with several cliches thrown in, but I appreciate the high production value, the solid cast, and given there are so few shows on television along these lines, I find this one good enough to throw my support behind.

Just kidding. Not everything that has violence and sex is just cliche money-maker one run lame series. From what I gather, people seem to like it for the good production and superb acting.

I havent seen Game of Thrones yet but I plan on watching, hopefully it is "On Demand" or will be on Netflix.

I did watch Spartacus (both seasons), the Borgias and Camelot and loved all three, even tho a friend of mine says Camelot is horrible because King Arthur is portrayed by a "pretty boy" but so far I really enjoy those 3 series, but the friend who doesn't like Camelot RAVES about Game of Thrones, So I am sure I will be checking it out in the next couple of weeks.

Re: Game Of Thrones

23
Well, spartacus, now there's a show full of violence and sex. Not quite my taste.

Anyways, there really isn't that much violence and sex in the series. If I remember correctly, the first 3 episodes are the only ones where anyone has sex at all. And the series is not full of violence at all, there's just lots of blood and gore where it's realistic, and thankfully, that's not all too often.

No, what I love about this show is the unique world, the awesome characters, and the rich story.

Oh, and by the way, 2 more books are planned, making it a total of 7. Planning on picking up the first book myself, although I fear I've half ruined them already by watching the series first.

I guess I couldn't have said it better myself.
I haven't read any of the books, nor seen the show, but I value more than just one opinion when it comes to this forum on all topics.

I'll refer to one of my signatures below. Sometimes a jab points out an opening, a weak spot, and the result builds some additional character.

Thranduil, ease up.

This is a forum for discussing swords, movies, shows, whatever. It is not a place for psychoanalysis or character building/detracting. I'm trying to be patient with this, but stick with arguing the person's opinion and not their personality, and do it in a civil fashion.

Sed is opinionated. So are we all. I don't see anyone taking major offense to his responses or his likes and dislikes. We all feel passionate about certain things in life. In the end, it's just a personal opinion.

If you guys like sex, violence, political intrigue, alliances, and betrayals, all in a historical drama, you've GOT to watch Deadwood. I'd never seen any of it because I don't get premium channels but I kept hearing about how good it was, even several years after it ended. When Amazon had a screamer price on it earlier this year, I bought it without ever having seen a second of it. And OMG. It was incredible.

(And some of us see way too many weak spots and show restraint when a jab could prove lethal.)

I've actually been meaning to watch Deadwood, as I'm a big fan of Timothy Olyphant. I love Justified and am eagerly awaiting season 2 on Blu-ray. That show is full of references to other movies and shows I like. It's got some good writers, that's for sure.

But as with GoT, I could never watch Deadwood when it was released since I didn't get the channel. I've seen some highlights of Ian McShane, though. Makes me want to watch more.
-_-

Re: Game Of Thrones

31
McShane is a knockout in this. I almost went to see Pirates 4 just to see him again, LOL, but I bet he doesn't get too drop as many F-bombs in Pirates as in Deadwood.

Some of my coworkers are watching GoT so I'll have to solicit their opinions. There's always the BD set if it gets raved about enough....

Re: Game Of Thrones

He was the best part of Pirates (well other than the cute mermaid), but that doesn't say much. It's a shame... reading up on Blackbeard, he would have been an amazing Blackbeard in an historically-accurate depiction solely about the person. What wasted potential... and they wasted him in the film, too. Not to spoil, but as a villain they really trashed his role.

Re: Game Of Thrones

35
Do we know if they are going to continue the show? I am reading the books and liking them, I can't say loving because there is a lot of woman degrading (I know that time period, realistic, maybe just too realistic for my taste sometimes), but overall enjoying the story, and on the comment of cliche, I havent seen the show yet,but when GoT wad first written it got praised for how differnent from other fantasies it was. I don't know what the show has done but I do see some similarities but not a total rip off like harry potter.

Re: Game Of Thrones

36
I've kept hearing how good this show is, and then the reviews started coming out for the BD set and how great it looked, so I broke down and bought it. I'm about halfway through it right now. I am definitely enjoying it and am not sorry that I bought it sight unseen. The production values are stunning and the acting is very solid. The story is, perhaps, a bit derivative, but then, how could it not be? In any case, I find it pretty engrossing.

I have not read the books, so I am watching this unspoiled (other than the fact that I know the big shocker that occurs near the end). I always prefer to see adaptations prior to reading the book (a luxury I did not have with LOTR) as I can then judge them on their own merits instead of comparing them to the book.

I have heard that each season of the show will more or less follow the books of the series, although they are calling the series Game of Thrones instead of A Song of Ice and Fire (I guess Game of Thrones trips off the tongue easier, and provides continuity of title lest anyone miss out on watching it because they didn't realize it was the new season of the show.) I say, more or less follow, because a friend tells me they are going to mix and match Books 4 and 5. Friend states that Book 5 follows a set of characters that no one cares about, so their story will be intercut with the story of Book 4 to create a more palatable mini-series. Or so friend says. It will be a few years before we know about this. And in the mean time, although Season 2 starts soon, I'll be waiting until probably this time next year, as I don't get HBO and will just wait for the BD set.

Did I mention that the BD set for Season 1 looks tremendous?

I read the book over Christmas and so spoiled the twists and turns. I bought the second book too but decided not to bother reading it as I want to enjoy the twists and turns when I watch it on TV. I bought the DVD box set the day it came out here in the UK and I love the series.

Littlefinger is my favourite character

Olorin: I have to say that this is probably the ONLY series HBO had to tone DOWN with less sex and violence. The books are much more graphic. I have read the first three books and am almost done with the fourth. Books 4 and 5 are actually "one book," by those books there are so many characters that he had to split it up because 4&5 occur at the same time.

I have heard nothing but good things from this show, but I still have yet to watch/buy it. I am attempting not to purchase anything for the foreseeable future (other than a bike for more cardio, but thats another story). I almost had a stroke when I got my credit card bill in this month. Maybe they will air season 1 on "on demand" through my cable provider and I can get caught up.

I always seem to like the dodgy characters haha, I like him because he's interesting and mysterious and characters like him keep you engaged. After I read the first book then saw the TV series I certainly think Aidan Gillen plays him brilliantly there's something slippery and dangerous about him. And you're right about them toning the sexual content down. I remember getting quite a shock reading the first book haha

And a word of warning to anyone on here who doesn't want to know what happens in the rest of the books: if you're going to watch the behind the scenes videos for season 2 on youtube DO NOT read the comments because some little idiots think its funny to post spoilers and ruin it for everyone else

Such an amazing series! Excited for season 2 on HBO. If there is anyone here that hasn't at least read the first book, it should be on your list of things to do as quickly as possible. It is the one of the few series that I would even consider comparing to LotR.

I think one of my favorite things about the books is how (aside from the things north of the wall) he (George R R Martin) has removed 'Good and Evil' from the world. It has been replaced with a perspective view of 'right and wrong'. Just creates a whole new feel when you see an action that would have been considered evil, but you see that it was done for love of a son, or to defend what is yours, etc.

That being said, there are still plenty of people (Littlefinger, Joffrey, etc) that you feel obliged to loathe with all your being, and who are given the role of 'evil' by the reader/viewer.

I don't feel obliged to hate Littlefinger, I have only read the first book so I'm not sure what will happen with the character but I feel perhaps he has good intentions but he does have that treacherous side to him. I don't know. I like him though, he keeps you thinking

Agreed, I like him as well, but the overwhelming majority of the fans seem not to. Then again, I think the greatest character in the story is Jamie Lannister; who most people dislike as well. There is always so much more to the characters of this story, that can many times completely change how you feel about them.

All I can say (without spoiling anything) is KEEP READING!
