Amazon's Series "The Rings of Power" Weapon Replicas

(I couldn't find a thread on this yet, so please remove if I missed it)

With the first teaser trailer, official name, and airing date September 2022... I thought it time to start a thread on the Official Replicas from the TV Series! Yes, I know it's still January, but, I'm excited :P

- I remember UC releasing some of the swords before FOTR was in theatres, so here's hoping that happens here as well.
- Would UC's movie license include the TV show? Or would that be a different license up for grabs?

No thread other than the preliminary discussion one on the series itself.

I'm being pessimistic and believe they are going to butcher Tolkien (much in the same fashion as Wheel of Time), and if so, that will automatically kill any interest whatsoever in any replicas... but we'll see.

As for a license, I'm pretty sure it would have to be a brand new thing. Remember, the movie license belongs to Warner Brothers, and this new series is an Amazon production. Two completely different things.

I also distrust very much. The few things that have been leaked give me a bad feeling... for now the only good news I've seen so far is the "confirmation" in twitter that behind the soundtrack is Howard Shore again... I hope so don't be a fake new.

And after seeing Wheel of Time, even worse sensations, as you comment. Because even if the series entertained me, I didn't love it, I didn't find it believable. And I'm not saying this because of the adaptation, because I haven't read the books and I can't judge what changes they've made. I say this because there was always something in the scene that took me out of fiction. Especially the clothes without beliable weartering and with too modern fabrics... too current haircuts and makeup. I think I've seen more believable cosplays.

But well, before the original trilogy was released, when so little was known about the movies as about the series now, I also had my fears and mistrust. But as good news leaked out, my hopeful grew.

Hopefully my gut is wrong this time too.

I hope I love it and have replicas to buy from the series too.

Hhmm... well now I'm torn.
If UC gets the license it'll match perfectly with our current displays, and not to mention UC has decades of experience making Middle Earth Replicas.
On the other hand, (and I know I'm a minority with this), it's also a chance for another company to make "real" replicas.... Or at least try to depending on the designs.

The rumor mill cranked out many disquieting rumors ahead of Jackson's LOTR. Some of them were apparently just completely made up, while others were actually trial balloons being floated by Jackson to see how fans would react to certain things, which he then omitted from the movies based on fan reaction. In the end, most of what we heard and feared about his movies did not come to pass. And don't prejudge the series by how good or bad Wheel of Time is, merely because it comes from the same studio. That'd be like saying, Paramount is making this so I know it won't be any good, because I don't like the Mission Impossible movies, for example. Now if it would turn out it was being made by the same group of writers and producers as Wheel of Time, well, that probably wouldn't bode well. It's the people who are actually making the production, not the ones who are writing the checks, that count.

Yes, I remember some fake rumors from the movies... I hope that the out of canon things that have been rumored about the series are trial balloons and that they have gotten the message from the fans.

And I get what you mean about the studio and WOT... but it is normal that it arouses mistrust about what level of quality that Amazon considered acceptable.

I hope that the difference in budget regarding to WOT It will be very noticeable in production.

I take everything coming out with a bit of hesitancy.

Wheel of Time, it is what it is, and adaptation. I think the show went WAY too fast, but heck, in this day in age, so many shows get cancelled before the first season airs, I can understand why they were rushing. Also didnt mind the shift of focus from Rand to Moiraine.

As far as Tolkien and being faithful, I mean, Tolkien himself changed his mind so often, he wasn't faithful to himself. In the last month or so I've read Fall of Gondolin, Beren and Luthien, and Children of Hurin and reading the evolution of some of these stories... JRRT must have been smoking something strong, that pipeweed was some good stuff. The idea of Sauron started out as an evil cat

No matter how bad someone dislikes an adaptation, its just that, an adaptation, the originals still exist. For instance, the Wheel of Time series entertained me, but I didnt care for a lot of the changes, I still have the Wheel of Time story as well.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.

I think they have posted them on twitter more biggers, more vertical, On facebook they uploaded them cropped to the proportions of instagram and the image is lost above/below.

Without going into deductions of who is who on the posters, personally they have left me calmer regarding the quality of the production/costumes, it looks much better than WOT.

Now I can't wait for the series to start. :D

On the other hand, and thinking only of collecting, the few weapons that are seen do not convince me too much (except perhaps the dwarf hammer)... I think it seems more from GOT or another fantasy world than from the LOTR universe.

Here they are big.

I put the links instead of trying to embed them in the thread, because I've tried it and they look so huge that they don't show up complete on the screen ...and with the 23 posters, the post seems endless.

I don't know how to make a high resolution image appear smaller in the forum, sorry.

I'm intrigued by this one: https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FKrkD14UYAU ... =4096x4096
It definitely caught my eye with the obvious Rohan motif but it is one that would make zero sense within the time-frame of this series. The Rohirrim as a culture of horse-lords is something that comes much, much later in the Third Age. It wouldn't even make sense for their predecessors, the Eotheod people. I keep trying to think of where else an equine motif appears anywhere else in Tolkien's mythos, and the only other reference would be anything to do with the Mearas, of which only Nahar and Shadowfax are mentioned. We know it can't be the latter, so could that possibly be Orome? Probably not, but whoever it is, I hope they don't make the mistake of shoehorning the Rohirrim in centuries before their time.

The rights prohibit anything from the Third Age, so the horse motif must refer to someone else. That said, they’re allowed to add to the mythos, so they may be choosing to posit that the association of the horse with the people it would become the Rohirrim began earlier than the Third Age. I guess we’ll find out in the fullness of time.

Some thing I think no one has commented on… One of the swords is supposed to be Narsil.

Having that exact same discussion over at FoU. Have you read confirmation that it is indeed Narsil? If so, I posited that it looks that gnarly because it was damaged and melted by the heat from Sauron's body. The only other theory thrown out of the only other broken blade in the books was Gurthang, but that would be First Age and thus not possible.

Fourth pic down on the first post containing pics. That image is truncated but if you download the full version, you'll see that what is being held is a broken blade and hilt. A pretty radical departure in look from what PJ gave us if that is indeed Narsil. Not a fan if it is. Not at all what I imagine a Numenorean sword looking like.

Sword of Eorl? The first king of Rohan, leader of Eotheod who was given Calenardhon (Rohan) for his people to settle in TA ( not SA -corrected by Valkirst)...

Your guesses all seem reasonable except:

A) Morgoth wielded a mace called Grond, not a sword. I also find a prologue that features him unlikely though possible.

B) I'm guessing you didn't read my post above but that cannot be Eorl. Calenardhon was given to the Eotheod in 2510 of the Third Age, not the Second Age as you cite and when this series takes place.

I just read this on wiki ( I know...it's a poor source)

"In battle, he wore black armour and wielded Grond, the Hammer of the Underworld. The great battering ram of Mordor was named for this weapon. He also wielded a black spear, and in early texts, a poison sword"

Maybe this is Morgoth's poison sword? Overstretched? What do you think Val?

Re: The Rings Of Power

46
I only guess that it may be Morgoth's sword because:

A) I belive that they would like to copy LOTR prologue to make an analogy and connect the show with the movies;
B) I think that they will show Sauron as Annatar in first few seasons so this black figure may be Morgoth from prologue or Sauron in later seasons...

Yes, Morgot also had other weapon besides the Grond, like the black spear that he stabs trees with.

I wish the same... I hope see Morgoth in the prologue. I think they have to introduce him in some way, to explain the cult of him in the temple of Numenor later on.

I think the same, the good thing about LOTR weapon skins, is that they are real swords with a fantastic touch to their design, but they would still be functional weapons, at least for the most part, and that brings realism. These that we see here, at least the part of them that you see, look more like fantasy objects than functional swords and lose that touch of realism that they had in the old trilogy, they almost seem to come out of Warcraft or Narnia.

Also, from the point of view of the replicas, with those shapes and volumes in the blades, I suspect that almost everything will be resin (at least the dark/evil swords). I hope I'm wrong, but hey, if in the end it's all resin... my wallet will appreciate it.

"I know everyone saw the teaser posters from LOTR on AMZ. UC is pursuing a license and has been for almost two years. I know that AMZ licensing director is tired of my monthly email asking if licensing has begun yet. The short story is, we are in contact, and licensing is not currently available to anyone and we are being told, it likely will not be until after season 1 is released. As soon as we have news, good or bad. I will let you guys know. We will continue to pursue new projects in our current license with LOTR and Hobbit, we have plenty more to come. We appreciate all of your feedback, I'm sorry I don't always answer every single question, but I'm trying 🙂"

Im going to be the sourpuss here and say that I don’t like any of these weapon designs, with the exception of maybe that sceptre. Everything else feels like it belongs in the Elder Scrolls.

One of the things that I love about LOTR and even The Hobbit is how they designed the weapons to reflect real world cultures and so the weapons looked incredibly realistic for a fantasy series. I think the most unrealistic was probably the dwarvern culture tbf.

But these just scream “fantasy”, which is why I likened them to the Elder Scrolls because they feel like the dragged them from that world and not from the middle Earth we know. I was hoping for more continuity between this series and the movies but clearly that is not to be the case.

The weapon design in the Witcher series and even in GOT feel superior to what we see here.
